Volleyball Update: Semi-finalists of 5-8 positions in FIVB Women’s World Championship
The incredible show of volleyball continues in Japan. The women’s volleyball teams from around the world gathered in Japan and demonstrated breath-taking performances. The 16th edition of FIVB Women’s World Championship is done with the first
two rounds and last leg of the tournament is about to begin. The final phase of the championship will feature the “final four” matches and also the classification matches for 5-12 positions. With the completion of second round on 10th November,
2010, a total of 12 teams were eliminated from the tournament, while the rest 12 are scheduled to play in the final round. United States, Russia, Brazil and hosts Japan will be playing for the first four positions in the championship.
Likewise, Serbia, Turkey, Germany and Italy are up for filling the 5-8 slots. The semi-finals are scheduled to be played on Saturday, 13th November, 2010. The Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan has been set to host these matches. The first
semi-final will feature Serbia and Italy, while Germany and Turkey will clash in the second semi-final for 5-8 position.
Recap of Serbia’s run in the championship
The Serbian team opened the championship in Pool A and played with great style. Serbia defeated Costa Rica in the opening match with a score of 3-0. They kept the same momentum and claimed following two games against Poland and Peru respectively. They continued
with success and earned victory against Algerian team. However, Japan broke their rhythm in the final match of first round and posted 3-1 victory over Serbia. The Serbs finished the first round with 9 points after losing one match.
The team marched into the second round of the championship and displayed great courage to play against stronger teams. Serbia finished the second round with win/loss ratio of 2-2 and reserved a berth in the final round of the championship.
Italy’s story
The Italian team was one of the top-3 teams of first round of the FIVB Women’s World Championship in Pool B. They exhibited a spectacular game and worked out great progress. Italy outplayed Puerto Rico, the Netherlands and Kenya in the first three matches.
Italy lost the last two matches to Czech Republic and Brazil but it managed to get a spot in the second round of the championship.
Italy was moved to Pool F in the second round. They came across resilient rivals such as Germany and United States but managed to steal points from them. Italy lost only one match in the second round and jumped into the final round.
Germany
The German team opened the tournament with a victory against Kazakhstan. The German squad took full advantage of their heights and strong physique. However, they couldn’t put up with the hard-hitting of United States in third match. Germany finished the
first preliminary round with a score of 4-1. Germany was placed in Pool F in second round. Germany lost its first match against Italy but recovered from the damage by defeating Czech Republic in next match.
Germany clashed with Brazil in third match and lost the match in consecutive sets. They finished the second round with victory against Netherland, which promoted them in the 5-8 category of final round.
Turkey
The Turkish team was grouped with Russia, South Korea, China, Dominican Republic, and Canada in Pool D of the FIVB Women’s World Championship. Out of five games in the first round, they clinched success in three matches and reserved a berth in the next round.
They clawed their way to Pool E along with Russia, Japan, Serbia, Poland, China, South Korea and Peru. Turkey finished in fourth slot with 10 points and moved to the final round. The team has big achievement to play at this level. They are scheduled to take
on Germany in 5-8 semi-finals tomorrow.
