Volleyball Update: The SWATCH FIVB Mazuri Orlen Grand Slam 2010- The game is on with Country Quota Matches
After the successful tour in Klagenfurt, Austria, the SWATCH FIVB World Tour makes a stop at Poland for another one-week fun-packed Grand Slam Tournament, which will feature an array of entertainment for beach volleyball fans and an assortment of breath-taking competitions among favourite teams of the world.
Poland started its journey to host the “major” international Beach Volleyball events in 2006. FIVB Junior World Championship was the first event staged at Myslowice city in Southern Poland. The great tradition was carried out further and the same city hosted other FIVB events, including youth world championships for under-19 players in the next year.
This week, the U.S. $600,000 Mazuri Orlen Grand Slam began at the Stare Jablonki, Poland, on Monday, 2nd August 2010. It is the sixth final Grand Slam Stop on the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour Calendar, which started at the courts of Hotel Anders. Originally, it is the seventh annual SWATCH FIVB World Tour Stop in city of Stare Jablonki.
The tournament has the same pattern, the prize money as A-1 Grand Slam Tournament, which ended in Austria last week. The Mazuri Orlen Grand Slam tournament highlights both the women’s and men’s competitions with a gap of one-day and it started off with women’s Country Quota playoff matches on Monday. After the QCs, a Qualification Tournament will set the field for 32-team Main Draw, which will begin on Wednesday with the first two rounds of pool play.
Initially, the teams from Brazil and Germany played three women’s CQs to set the field for Tuesday’s Qualification Tournament, which will determine the last eight spots for “money” rounds of women. In addition, Wednesday’s knock will mark the first two rounds of the pool play.
In the succession of game, the women’s contest will reach the “final four” phase on Saturday. The men are also following the same routine of matches, they’re scheduled to start the Country Quota matches on Tuesday and further they will pass through the Qualification round and reach the “final four” matches on Sunday. The champions of both genders in the Grand Slam will share an amount of $43,500 for the first-place prizes.
The time and fate changes briskly, the fact holds true for the runner-up duo of the last Grand Slam Tournament, Vivian Cunha and Taiana Lima, as they were eliminated from the competition on the first day of Mazuri Orlen Grand Slam.
In the starting match on Monday, Vivian/Lima defeated their country mates Luana Madeira and Lillian Maestrini in 21-17 and 21-19 in 44 minutes but lost momentum to deal with the other Brazilian pair, Vanilda Leao and Angela Vieira. Vivian/Lima lost the game to Vanilda/Angela in two straight sets. The sweet revenge was taken by Vanilda/Angela as they were defeated by Vivian/Lima last week in QCs.
In the other CQs, German Jana Kohler and Julia Sude eliminated Rieka Brink-Abeler and Angelina Grun by posting 23-25, 21-19 and 15-12. It took them about 61minutes to get the clutch the authority over their opponents.
The great Brazilian duo, Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca hold the position of defending champions of the Mazuri Orlen Grand Slam. They just won the A-1 Grand Slam Championship last week at Klagenfurt, Austria. Moreover, they also won the ConocoPhillips Grand Slam Stavanger Title in Norway and 1 to 1 Energy Grand Slam Title in Switzerland. They are in excellent form this season and they certainly aim for another gold medal.
This is very important for them, if they win this title at Mazury Orlen Grand Slam, it will tie the record 35 titles established by Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh of America. The competition is on till Saturday and the next matches will conclude the best among all.
