Volleyball Update: Winless teams of the first round of the FIVB Women’s World Championship 2010
The FIVB Women’s World Championship has covered the length of first round which was kicked off on 29th October, 2010 in several cities of Japan. The event welcomed 24 teams from around the world and provided a chance to the players to showcase
their attack and defence capabilities. As the tournament progressed, better teams rose up on the scene, while low performance squads suffered the damage and fell back. The powerhouses enjoyed victories but there were teams which remained out of luck throughout
the championship. The list of winless teams is as followed:
Algeria – Pool A Kenya – Pool B Kazakhstan – Pool C Canada – Pool D
Algeria’s story
Algeria’s team was placed in Pool A along with Japan, Serbia, Poland, Peru and Costa Rica. The Algerian squad opened the tournament by taking on Peru on October 29. The Peruvian ladies enjoyed a good form and thrashed 3-0 victory over Algeria. Peru’s team
easily managed to launch their power on the Algerian team and scored 25-16, 25-12 and 25-18 in three consecutive sets.
Algeria was challenged by Costa Rica on the next day. Both teams had similar statistics as Costa Rica also lost their opening match to Serbia with the same score. The second match was a fair chance for two teams to make a difference. Luck favoured Costa
Rica and they outplayed Algeria’s team with better score. Costa Rica posted straight sets’ victory over Algeria by sending 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, and 25-10).
Calamity continued for Algeria and they couldn’t improve their performance. In the next two games, Algeria was ousted by Japan and Poland. Algerian team had to make a graceful exit from the championship with a humiliating score of 0.
The Underdogs Kenya
The Kenyan Women’s National Volleyball Team entered the tournament with a tag of underdogs. However, the team struggled to get recognition on the international scene. Kenya was put up with the powerful Brazilian side in the first match. The game ended with
a predicted result as Brazil was too strong for Kenya. The Powerhouse Brazil clipped victory by posting 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, and 25-11). By hook or by crook, Kenya was tied-up with the stronger sides such as Italy, Netherlands and Puerto Rico. Kenya finished
the first round with a null score and got a return ticket to home.
Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan is also in the list of winless teams. The Kazak team played in the tournament with a label of Pool C. They were accompanied by Germany, Thailand, United States, Croatia and Cuba. Kazakhstan lost the first match to Germany by receiving 0-3 (21-25,
14-25 and 16-25). Kazakhstan fought with determination in the start but German ladies kept an upper hand on them and won the match.
Kazakhstan broke the ice in second match against Thailand. The Kazaks were able to create a little spark in the game when they captured one set. Nonetheless, Thailand regained the control of operations and clinched victory with the help of 3-1 (25-15, 25-18,
20-25, and 25-16. Kazakhstan improved in the following match and gave a hard time to Cuba’s team. Kazakhstan couldn’t win the match but their effort was admirable. Cuba posted 3-2 (20-25, 25-15, 27-25, 23-25, and 15-10). Croatia supplied them the last push
with 3-0 victory and Kazakhstan got eliminated.
Canada
The Canadian team lost the first three matches with an absolute score of zero. They couldn’t even secure a single set in the game. However, they learned from their mistakes and resisted to Turkey in the fourth match. The match continued for 5 sets but finally
ended in Turkey’s favour. Canada played the last match of first round against Dominican Republic and failed to shake off the bad impression once again. Czech Team earned 3-1 victory on Canada.
