Question:

Volleyball- a good spiking 'approach'?

alright so ive been playing volleyball for 2 years now and i STILL dont really have the hang of how to spike properly.

like, i have the arm motion down and everything, and i can hit it nice and hard if im just standing there, but when i try to actually jump to spike it everything falls apart.

are there any good tips you guys have as far as how to make a propper approach (i know its like STEP stepstep jump) ((lol)) and TIMING im really bad at that and i dont really know when to go.

i know if i can just get these things down i can be like 3475187243648 times better.

  1. Just practice these steps left a big step then two litle step right left.

  2. You start your approach when the ball reaches its peak.  Hope that helps! Other than that, its just practice.

  3. have you tried asking your coach for help on spiking?usually that would help.cause it's kind of hard to explain on the internet.because our ways of spiking may not work for you.

  4. The proper approach is LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT (if you are right handed)

RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT (if you are left handed)

    and timing is key

  5. i agree with the first answer. ask your coach. they're the best at telling you what your doing wrong so you can fix it.

sometime i have a problem with not looking up when hititng the ball or takign to many steps.

make sure if ur right handed it's left, right left for a FULL approach. and vise versa for left handed.

  6. okay it seems like you have the steps down. if you have the arm movements its all easy after this.

    1. If you're right handed step: r.l.r Left handed: l.r.l.

    2. Have a partner set(good) to you and just practice jumping && stepping.

    3. Now timing: when the ball hits its peak and starts coming down that's when you should start stepping.

    4. && if you're too late or early just set it over. make sure not to lift it thought.

  7. There's some pretty good advice here, but one thing to think of is coordination. Keep practicing the approach, start slow without a ball and gradually increase the speed. If you are in fact not that coordinated, don't worry, that comes with practice and age. I've coached girls that have been pretty clumsy one year and by the next they were completely different.

  8. i'm bad at timing too. tell you're self to wait untill the ball has reached it's highest point, for an approach try starting with you're right foot forword. it works for me try it ( oh and if you're a leftie try with you're left food first) like an extra step almost

  9. Timing is a very hard thing to perfect but is crucial to be the best hitter you can be.

if you are hitting from the Outside position (the left side) leave when the set is at it's highest point. Some people's approaches are different speed so if your late i.e. feel your self falling as you hit the ball leave a little later. If you are early, i.e. just barely getting the ball either take a faster approach or give your self more time and leave earlier.

If you are unsure if your early or late ask your coach to watch you the next time you hit or even a team mate of yours.

If you hit middle leave when the setter touches the ball and again adjust accordingly.  Hope this helps  and good luck you'll get it after some practice

  10. all right. you already know STEP stepstep. thats good. the way i got my timing together was by waiting til the ball got to the very highest peak of the set then starting my approach. i hope this helps you really really big!

  11. For righties its a left right left approach.  if you are having trouble with timing all you can do is practice i still suck at hitting but i do know the basics.  to make it easier you should jump about 2 or 3 feet from the net.  if you jump close to the net make sure you jump straight up by starting the jump from your heels and rocking to your toes.  if you are having alot of trouble pull your coach aside after practice and ask for some one on one help.  they should be glad to help you get it right.  after that just keep practicing until you find your way of hitting. Good Luck!
