  1. especially if you're a hitter---

i don't think a ds or libero would need them because they're nawt jumping up in the air and landing weird on their ankles....

  2. In reality usually the front row players wear them because when the jump up, theres a possibility they could fall on the opposing team's feet, thus spraining an ankle. You wear them to prevent this. I'm a libero and I still wear them because as the top defensive person, I sometimes run into people in order to get a ball or I take a particularly nasty dive which could cause strain on my ankles. I would definetly suggest them, even if you are a new player. If you aren't willing to pay the 80 dollars or so per ankle brace (I'm talking about the really good volleyball ones) then you could settle for the lace up ones that can be bought at any good sporting store.

  3. They are merely structures designed to either help players to recover from ankle injuries, or prevent them from getting injuries. A DS/Libero might wear them because their ankles are at risk, as they move around so much.

  4. They are needed in higher level volleyball when you have a hitter and a blocker(s) coming down very close to the net and there's a chance that someone will go under and s***w up a landing.

DS and liberos probably won't need them as you're going to be in the back row and at most back row hitting but it's a preventive measure you can take, especially if you've had previous injuries.

  5. it depends on how high a level of volleyball u are playing and whether or not ur ankles tend to buckle. i suggest using an active ankle brace before u hurt ur ankle because if u wait til after it will hurt when ever u play. mine hurts almost all the time.

  6. it depends on how strong your ankles are..i would sugest them but just cuz my ankles are pretty screwed up. if you've never hurt them, i would suggest not wearing them because your ankles may start to depend on them

  7. you would need ankle guards (usually Active Ankles, its the most popular brand) if you have weak ankles.  all they do is reduce the chance of rolling your ankle when you are running, diving, sprawling, etc.  a DS/Libero would need them because they are the ones who are taking the majority of the digs.  There is usually only one on a team, so if they roll their ankle, the team is sorta out of luck.  To make it simple, active ankles reduce the risk of an injured ankle...simple as that

  8. You would need them if you had previous ankle injury, or if you are afraid of being injured. Most of the time injury happens when a blocker (or spiker) comes down and steps on another player's foot, so that being a DS/Libero you have less chance getting ankle injury as you never have to jump that high... so I would say you probably won't need ankle guard.

  9. well i understood that they're mostly for hitters.  i have them, and i used them because for like drills and stuff the balls rolling under your feet, and when you come down from blocking or hitting the opposing teams feet might like come under the net.  ds and liberos hit too.  quick reactions are needed and that involves twisting, so that might help.  i would suggest getting them, the really like saved me and they're great!

  10. Quick answer - you don't need them, but you should do balance training.

Here is the whole story:  Most sprained ankles are cause by one of two things - weak ankle muscles or landing on something like a foot or a volleyball.  Numerous studies have shown that ankle and balance exercises significantly reduce the number of ankle sprains that people get.  An extra benefit of having great balance is improved quickness.  The same muscles that help stabilize you also help you to quickly change directions and apply force in the direction you want to go.

I would add two or three days a week of balance specific training to both help prevent ankle injuries and increase quickness.  If you do decide to wear Active Ankles (My favorite brand) make sure to do the extra balance training so your ankles don't get weak from wearing the braces.  The good news is that a balance workout can be done in 10 minutes or less so it isn't too hard to add to your training.  Check out the links below.
