Volleyball becomes second best sport in Kenya – Volleyball news
The Sports Personality of the Year (SOYA) Awards, which have been the platform for recognising and celebrating Kenya’s best sportsmen and women were recently announced and Prisons women’s volleyball club team emerged as the top sports team in the country.
The men’s national volleyball squad was named the second best team of the year. On the whole, the challenging sport of volleyball surfaced as the second best sport in Kenya.
The President of Kenyan Volleyball Federation (KVF), Waithaka Kioni, was totally delighted about the increasing popularity of volleyball in the country. He praised the work of his whole staff that put up great efforts throughout the 2011 season and struggled
to expand the sport in every nook and cranny of the region.
He shared his thoughts during the recently held KVF National Executive Committee meeting. It was the first gathering of the KVF in the year 2012.
The participants of the gathering had a good topic to discuss as sport of volleyball was named second best in the country.
In fact, the beautiful sport of volleyball really deserved to be recognised as it saw a lot of improvement in 2011. The game saw development at local, regional and national level. The women’s team got the chance to play at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World
Cup Championship as a representative of African continent. It was pretty impressive and great achievement for Kenya Prisons to finish in the fifth slot.
The Prisons Volleyball team also proved its endeavours at the national league competition and clawed its way to the top.
Likewise, the men’s national volleyball team of Kenya was equally active on the scene during the season. The Kenyan hotshots participated in the 2011 All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique. They displayed good performance and managed to finish in the top
three teams of the competition. The men’s team returned home with bronze medal. The women’s national volleyball of Kenya also took part in the 2011 All African Games and had third position finish.
Furthermore, the local school teams of Kenya joined the East Africa Secondary Schools Championships. The boys’ team of Cheptil and Malava, the girls’ squad, staged impressive play and captured country regional trophies.
Hence, the future of Kenyan volleyball is seemingly very bright and Kenyan Volleyball Federation hopes that volleyball will go on top in the next SOYA Awards.
