Question:

Volleyball coach AND player!?

by  |  earlier

I go to a small school, where the volleyball coaches are parent volunteers. No tryouts...anyone who wants to play gets to play. I play on the eighth grade team, and there's nine girls on my team. Not to brag, but we're really good. We place high in every tournament we enter. I also play on a select team. However, the girls in my class are extremely competitive, and insanely jealous to find out someone is doing something better than them. One of my friends and I am going to coach the fifth grade team (as assisstant coaches). We haven't told anybody in our class, yet. Practices start Tuesday. Any ideas on how to break it to them? Any advice for first time coach?

Also, do you have any cheers we can use for my team, or the fifth grade team?

  1. Being an assistant coach, you just need to follow what the head coach wants to do.

I was assistant coach for one season, and I didn't even have a chance to demonstrate my little tricks.

  2. just concerntrate on your coaching and

don't think what your friends are thinking.

  3. I've been a volleyball coach for a while now and the number one piece of advice I can give you is get to know your team. Learn what they like and what they don't, both on the court and off. Making a connection with your team will allow them to see you as more than just a coach. Especially since you are an athlete too, don't be afraid to get in there and practice with them. Some kids learn from watching, others from trying, others from listening so find out how to best coach each of your players and give them the kind of coaching that they need. At the same time you need to make sure that they understand that when you tell them to do something, they need to do it. Some kids will question you, so don't be afraid to tell them why - if you don't know why they're doing something, then you have a problem. You should always have a purpose to every drill you do. Don't be afraid to ask the head coach why they are doing something - learning from them will also help to make you a better coach.

Doing all this is more time consuming than just picking one philosophy and sticking with it, but it will be more rewarding to you and to them in the end. Share with them your love of the game and they will strive to share that with you.

  4. dont make a big deal about it. dont even talk about it. if one of ur friends says oh  do u want 2 hang out on a day u have 2 coach, then just say sorry i cant and leave it at that. if they ask y, then just simply tell them u r helping to coach a 5th grade team. and leave it at that and if she makes a big deal, answere her questions and change the subject. basicaly dont talk bout it unless u have 2

  5. Just tell them in a matter of fact way.  Do not make a big deal of it.  If they have a problem, then THEY have a problem.  I think it is great that you are helping the fifth grade team.

As the assistant coaches, listen to your head coach explain the skill or the drill and then jump in and help.  BE POSITIVE.  You want to teach volleyball, but you really want to make it fun for them so they will be back tomorrow.  Even if you are correcting them, you can do it in a positive way.  There are enough negative coaches out there.  Do not add to that number.  People see coaches screaming at the players and the teams are successful.  People decide that technique works.  Just remember one thing.  Remember how you like to be coached.  Then, try to coach like that.

  6. well just tell them casually and if they freak out then it's their

    problem.

they will just have to work harder to be better

jealousy is a nasty thing >x<
