If you toss the ball up for a serve and don't like the toss and let it hit the ground and then cross the court line to retrieve the ball - that should NOT be a foot fault, right? Is there a good definition of exactly what is and what is not a foot fault on service around?? Thx, rc

  1. However, I play for both school and club and for my league at school spare tosses are not allowed at all.  The same goes for most tournaments at competitive levels.

  2. If you haven't touched the ball other than the toss, it is not a foot fault. You are allowed one "spare" toss.

  3. It is a foot fault if on a serve you step over the line before contacting the ball...thus you can jump serve from inside the court so long as you jumped from outside the line and hit the ball prior to landing from your jump.  Also, you are no longer allowed to let a ball drop if you don't like the toss.  That is considered a fault as well and results in a sideout/loss of serve/point depending on whether or not you are also still playing sideout volleyball rather than rally point.

  4. If you did not already hit the ball on a serve, but you let the ball fall because you didn't like the toss, and you cross the line, it does not count as a foot fault. A definition of a foot fault is when serving the ball, if you cross the line before or when you hit the ball, and intend to hit it, it is considered a foot fault. Anything other IS a foot fault. Hope I helped! Have a good day!

  5. You are right. You can walk anywhere to retrieve the ball.

Foot fault is called if your foot is "physically" on the line or inside the court when you are "contacting" the ball. It is fine if your foot is in the air.

  6. A second toss is no longer allowed in most rules...if a player does what you described it is simply a missed serve and sideout/point. A foot fault is stepping on the court boundary line before your hand contacts the ball to serve.

  7. It is not a foot fault.  The play should be whistled as soon as the ball hits and since you did not hit it, it is not a foot fault.

In junior high or high school, you will be granted a re-serve.

In USAV club in 14 and younger competitions, you will be granted a re-serve.

In any other group, it will be a side-out.  There are no re-serves in other groups.

  8. you are complete correct!

  9. the only time that you will get a foot fault on the serve is if you hit the ball and with your step that you use to hit the serve gose over the line

  10. it shouldn't but is it?

  11. a foot fault is when you hit the ball on a serve but you step over the line. It's OK to step over the line if you haven't hit the ball yet, i tend to do it a lot.
