Volleyball formations you should know about – Volleyball Tactics
Volleyball is becoming a sport that is being accepted by people of all cultures and is being played by both males as well as females. Not only that, the game has successfully reached the grass root level in many countries by whole-heartedly taking the younger
generation into its fold.
The reason for its popularity and rapid success is that volleyball is relatively easy to understand and simple to play. However, for those who have mastered the skills of the game, there are various different types of strategies involved that lead to a thrilling
and masterful win. In order to understand the details of volleyball, we will discuss the different types of formations used in volleyball and how they are useful.
Before we go into the details of the formation, one must know how many formations there are and how to interpret them. In all, there are three formations which are denoted by numbers. There is the 4-2, 6-2 and 5-1. The first number in the notation represents
the number of hitters on the team whereas the second number represents the number of setters.
First of all, we are going to talk about the 4-2 formation, which is the most basic one in volleyball and is made use of at the beginner’s level. As discussed above, the 4-2 formation includes four hitters along with two setters. In this set-up, the setters
are positioned at the middle front or the right front. This positioning allows for two attackers to be present in the front row at all times. As a result, the 4-2 formation facilitates an offensive style of volleyball. The disadvantage of this style of volleyball
is that it is not a defensive formation.
The second type of formation is the 6-2. This style allows for all the front players to be hitters, with the setter coming up from behind when needed. In practice, all the people present in the back row act as hitters as well. The two players of the back
row players can set the ball too. This formation obviously is highly offensive as all team players act as attackers. However, the two players that also have to perform the role of the setter need to be quite skilled as they take up dual responsibilities.
Last but not the least, we move on to the 5-1 formation. As the notation implies, there is only one setter in this style. Therefore, during rotation, there will be a time when the front row will have three attackers while at other times only two. Interestingly,
a team making use of the 5-1 formation does a mix of 4-2 and 6-1. With the setter in the front row, the formation looks like 4-2 and with the setter in the back row, it depicts the 6-2 formation. The advantage of this type of formation is that the setter has
three options for setting the ball. This keeps the opposing team confused. They do not know until the last moment where the spike is going to come from. Therefore, the chance of scoring a point increases.
Knowing these strategies makes a player confident while playing and it is that attitude that leads to winning a game on any court.
