Today is the last day of try-outs.

On day 1, I got 10/10 on serving, day 2 was 9/10, and day 3 was also 9/10.

My coach knows I am a consistent server.

I also came in second in the half mile run.

However, I'm having trouble hitting and sliding.

When I dive, I know I'm doing it wrong, but my knee pads abrade my knee because the gym floor catches and doesn't allow very good slide.

But it really hurt and I have a huge bleeding rugburn on my knee.

So how can I be better at sliding?

Also, for some reason my hitting has sucked lately.

I did well the first time, but I don't know exactly what I do wrong.

I think it has to do with my timing.

Oh, and I don't understand 6-2 rotation at all, and that's what we have to do.

And what is a game called "tile action" or something?

  1. One way to practice sliding is just by doing it over and over.  I know it might sound kinda weird, but if u have a hard floor in your house, just slide on it.  Really the only way to practice hitting is by doing it. =\  I know it's not what u wanted to hear, but there isn't much u can do off of the court at your house.  The 6-2 is really simple.  There is a setter in the front row and the back row.  When the setter from the front row goes to the back row, then the other setter takes over and the first setter passes right side defense. There is never a back set hitter unless there is a back row set in which the right side defender hits from the back row.

I have no idea what "tile action" is. It's probably just a term that your school uses.  Ask one of your coaches what it means.

  2. I don't have many experiences like the other, i'm just 5 years play in volleyball and i'm just 14 years girls. But i'll try to help.

As libero, i must can take the loose ball or error ball, althought it's very difficult or imposible.. So Sliding is my favourite way to take the ball. I can sliding from soccer. I'm Goal Keeper. Well sliding with head first can learned from front roll.. Know?? like rolling to front on matrress . Then sliding with legs first, save with legs it's easy.

In my country, Indonesia, it's legal to save the loose ball with legs.

6-2 Rotation?? I think i knew it! But i don't really sure. Because it isn't sure theory, some coaches make some different in their game paln rotation. It depends with your coach strategy, and the coach depends to player skills.

Well, i just try to help.

You can e-mail me if you don't understand some words..

I'm Indonesian. But my english test always good...

    So i think, it's clear..

    GOOD LUCK!!!

  3. First of all, great job on your serving and 1/2 mile run!

    1.  Sliding - Actually when you slide, your knees should never come in contact with the floor, sometimes they do hit a little on the side, but you can usually avoid it.  When you think about defense you shouldn't think about the fear of sliding, just think, "'I'm going to get this ball up!"

First step:  Start in your defensive position.  Stay low, the higher you are the more it hurts, so bend those knees!  Take a few shuffle steps to your right, on your last step, slightly bend your right knee in and push off with your left leg.  Reach with your arms to get the ball, then slide on your HIP, not your knees.  Then get up quickly in whatever fashion your coach has taught you.  (barrel roll, over the shoulder, etc...)  Then practice going to the left.  This is sort of hard to explain in writing, but I hope it helps!

    2.  Hitting:  I'm not for sure what position you play, but I've been an outside hitter.  If you are early, you will feel like you are hitting on your way down and the ball will probably go into the middle of the net.  If you are late, you will feel really rushed and not get a good jump.  I would go back to the basics.  Concentrate on your footwork first, once you feel comfortable with your footwork, slow down your arm swing and concentrate on reaching really high.  Once you start getting a few over and in the court, speed up your armswing.

    3.  A 6-2 rotation means that you are playing with 2 setters.  The setter in the backrow will be the one setting, the setter in the front row will hit.  Usually a team does this is to keep 3 hitters in the front row at all times.  It can be really confusing learning where to go, but keep paying attention, soon it will become very natural.  You can also look up 6-2 rotation on google, they should give you some pictures to look at so that you can have a visual before your next day of tryouts.

    4.  I've never heard of "tile action."  You may have to ask someone.

    5.  If you are not feeling the greatest about some of your skills the best thing to do is practice at home.  I would practice for hours in my backyard by myself, just passing against our house, setting and hitting too.  Inside my house I would practice my spike approach reaching for the doorways and ceiling.  It really pays off because then you can go into practice/tryouts feeling confident!  Keep your head up, you can do it!!
