  1. If you have a great approach you are off to a great start!! One of the things you need to do now is not only snap your wrist, but you need to swing your arm down. The amount of speed you swing your arm is a big factor. Don't be afraid to use your shoulders too!

  2. Practice, practice, practice is the only solution.

Without a ball - this can be done anywhere, anytime ... for practice.

Develop the fast elbow flick - you need to start s-l-o-w at first, and don't go all out fast right away - otherwise you'll strain your muscles - they need to be warmed up first, by slowly doing it.

You start with a raised bent elbow, and you flick it straight (ie. straighten it) - this is your spike - but also your wrist continues the motion and goes forward - this adds the spin - that is very helpful to have with your spikes. Do this a few times a day, say 5? minutes - and do it only a few times, before your first spike - at volleyball.

The practice is so that this becomes your natural motion for doing spikes...

With a practice volleyball - purchase a cheap practice volleyball (or ask your parents to) - cheap because you want to use it outside against any hard wall - the cheap one will take the punishment, the expensive ones - you shouldn't use outside because it damages the outside skin.  Anyway have it with the correct air pressure (you should be able to push your thumbs about 1/8th inch into the volleyball easily - this minimises injuries, and you get a good feedback with the volleyball - with a hard volleyball, it is usually because there is far too air in the volleyball - and hard volleyballs absorb your energy, instead of bouncing it back).  You find an outside wall that can be used to spike against - brick or concrete. You want to throw up the volleyball as if it was a 'set' and to go forward to spike it.  Spiking practice like this, is like the real thing - practice like this, for 10 to 15 minutes at a time - do it several times a week - and you will soon have your hard spike.  It is to build up your muscles - that are used for spiking - and it is important to feel that you are coordinating everything.  If it is uncoordinated, you are not transferring the energy 100%.  Also the speed at which you spike will determine whether it will be a hard or soft spike?  A lot of practice will be the answer - but you need to work at it.  No work - no results.

When it gets to be boring, you vary the set, so that you can spike at almost any set - and do some left handed too - which does come in handy when you get one like that.

And with a practice ball - you can practice with volleyball friends - to dig, set and spike at each other --- building up your overall ball handling skills - which are as important as having a great spike.

  3. exactually what brookelovesarod said!!

  4. I play volleyball and I am a hitter so I try to imagine that the ball is my brother or something like that, just be aggressive.

  5. Faster approach, lifting weights will help too! The more arm strength the better. Make sure your twisting your hips in the air and snapping your rist because the follow through will give the ball more speed.
