Volleyball latest: Dominican Evelyn Cerrera takes up a new challenge
The former volleyball player and mentor of Dominican Republic’s Women’s Volleyball team, Evelyn Carrera has made big move by joining the Baja California program of volleyball selections in Tijuana, Mexico. Now she will use her abilities to train the youth
and junior volleyball teams of Baja California along with the other members of state’s Institute of Sport and Physical Culture at the High Development Centre. Carrera had been long attached with Dominican Republic volleyball. She was a member of Dominican
Republic National Team as a player for many years and worked out great honour for her country. She represented Dominican Republic at the 2002 Athens Olympics in Greece, where she achieved the title of second best player of the world.
She acted as a libero and played an instrumental role in success of her team. She was part of the victorious Dominican Republic squad in 2003 that seized gold at the Pan American Cup. Individually, Carrera won the best libero’s award. She did the same in
the 2004 Pan American Cup and settled for best libero’s position. She attained the ‘best digger’ and ‘best libero’ award in 2004 Pan American Womens’ Volleyball Cup. Carrera also played in Puerto Rico Professional League until 2009.
Carrera passed the FIVB courses and started her career as coach by working on youth teams in Santo Domingo. Now that she has joined the Baja California teams, it would be a great opportunity for players to learn from her knowledge and experience.
Carrera is confident and full of ambition to work on this project. She commented, “It is really a big challenge and I take it with a lot of desire, love…you have to want in order to get the thing to be done well.To take the teams at the highest level for
each competition, the results are not going to come after one single day. It is a matter of time.”
She disclosed her thoughts about the working plan. She said, “We really ask the maximum to the players in the day-by-day, work hard with love and heart, because it is necessary to inculcate the values, you play not only for your state but also for your country.”
