Volleyball latest: So-Jin Lee and Ramon Burgos fall victim to Anti-Doping panel
It is an ethical duty of each player to ensure that no prohibited substance enters their body but unfortunately it has been witnessed that some of the players use the unfair means to enhance their performance. There have been a lot of cases of players using
different drugs in order to get a competitive edge in the game. The sports management committees and confederations have strict rules against such awful acts. If a player is diagnosed with positive results of using any performance-enhancing substance, he or
she is liable to get banned and suffer the consequences.
The Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) is also very concerned about it and it has an Anti-Doping Hearing Panel, which ensures drug-free game. In the recent memory, the FIVB has found the violation of Anti-Doping rules by two players from Korea
and Puerto Rico. So-Jin Lee of Korea’s Women’s National Volleyball team and Puerto Rico’s Ramon Burgos failed to pass the Anti-Doping test.
The Korean female player was tested during the Asian Women’s Cup in Indonesia this year. Lee was found having used the prohibited substance of Formoterol, which according to her was used to treat her asthma. The player has been banned for nine months from
October 14, 2010 onwards.
On the other hand, Ramon Burgos of Men’s National Volleyball Team of Puerto Rico has the similar story. His body specimen contained 11-nor-9-caboxy-delta-tetrahydrocannabinol (Cannabinoids) following the U-21 Continental Championship 2010, which was organised
by NORCECA. Burgos has been banned for six months from 13th October, 2010. The performance-enhancing drug Cannabis is on the World Anti-Doping Association’s prohibited list and it will remain the same in 2011.
The Federation International de Volleyball firmly believes that it is necessary that the players are aware of the rules concerning Anti-Doping. The Federation has educated the athletes about the rules on various occasions. The FIVB also has an online Anti-Doping
education programme, which is a good facility for players to learn about Doping and Therapeutic. Such programs are designed to avoid the cases like So-Jin Lee, who was taking medication for asthma cure. However, the banned players will return to game after
the time specified by FIVB.
