Question:

Volleyball or Spiritline?

I'm going into 7th grade and all summer I was planning to do spiritline (cheerleading) in the fall, and volleyball in the winter. But they changed the seasons and now spiritline and volleyball are both in the fall, and I can't decide which 1 I want 2 do. My parents want me 2 play volleyball. They say cheerleading isn't a sport. They also said that they would support me no matter what decision I make. And they could help me because they played on a couples volleyball team for 7 years. But I'm not very good at it. The only experience I have is from gym class. I don't have any experience with cheerleading. I don't think I'd be very good at this either, but I want 2 do it more than I want 2 play volleyball. And I could just play volleyball in the fall, then do spiritline in the winter for the boys basketball team, but theres this 1 guy whos gonna play on the basketball team that I really hate, and he hates me 2. I'm asking a lot of my friends for opinions, but wat do u people think?

  1. I think you should play vollayball in the fall and then join a cheer team that practises all year round! Or you could play club vollayball and that starts in november. Look for clubs near you.

  2. i am going to say that u should play volleyball in the fall because even though cheerleading is a sport, volleyball is more of a team sport that will prepare for any other sports u continue to do, and also yur parents have played it and will be able to help you and you will improve quickly, but they weren't cheerleaders so they won't be able to help you, and since you've said u have no experience with either i would definitely so volleyball because you have people to help you in your own family, while it will be very hard to do cheerleading without any inside help, plus u havent done it before, and therefore are probably unable to do things like the splits, i also have to say that their is no preconceived stereotype of volleyball players while cheerleaders are known to be s****., stuckup, and preppy,

i still think u should do cheerleading in the winter though, and i know that you "hate" some guy, but trust me, even though you hated him in sixth grade you guys will probably be friends by the time you are in 8th grade so don't let that stop u from being a cheerleader, u don't have to cheer for him personally u r just cheering for his team so it will be fine

  3. i agree w/ ur parents...cheerleading isnt a sport, thay're talented dont get me wrong but its not a sport...vball is awesome...i started playing in high school and wish i had played earlier so i'd be better...ur parents can help

  4. i think you should play volleyball guring the fall and do cheer during the winter.

"but theres this 1 guy whos gonna play on the basketball team that I really hate, and he hates me 2"

who cares about that guy? it'll be pretty immature, if you dont join cheer just because that guy is on the basketball team.  what a lost that would be. its not like you have to be on the same team playing with him.

  5. With practice, anyone can be a cheerleader.  Come on.  Face it.  You are a cheerleader all the time when cheering on your favorite team.  Sure, the flipping the pyramids are quite impressive, but standing there and waving your arms and clapping is not a sport.

Don't get me wrong, when cheerleaders do their routines and acrobatics and pyramids, some are awesome.  But when they're just standing in line with pom poms, it's boring and no one really pays attention to them.

Of course, you're asking this question on the volleyball page, which of course people will say volleyball.  If you ask that same question at the cheerleading page, you'll get the opposite answer.

But, for a sport where you'll get more out of the sport, volleyball's your choice.  Volleyball will teach you athletic skill that you can use in other sports.  Cheerleading will teach you how to clap with rigid boardlike arms and learn cheers that come out of a corny movie.

With volleyball, you'll learn hundreds of new and exciting skills.  Passing, digging, serving, hitting angle, hitting line, roll shots, etc.  The learning continues.  In cheerleading, what will you continue to learn.  50 different ways of clapping?  How boring is that?

However, it's up to you.  Do whatever you like.  Either one could give you a scholarship in school.  There's a possible career in volleyball like the pro circuit.  Cheerleading will get you to a semi-pro, pro team cheerleading squad which people ignore you more than they do now.  Who pays the money to go to a pro game to watch the cheerleaders.  Sure, eye-candy is great, but right away, you're back to watching the game.

  6. Well, i personally prefer volleyball. I think that it is a great team sport and it is tonsss of fun! i started playing in 6th grade without experience and now after several years of sticking with it im really good. so basically, dont let lack of experience hold u back. also, cheerleading is a sport and it is very difficult too, i have a lot of respect for my friends that cheer. I would try both sports if i were you, even if there a guy that you hate.  You never know you might end up to be really good at one or even both of them.  Good luck!!

  7. I had the same problem in 7Th grade but it dosent matter if your friends are in it or how good you are just pick the sport you enjoy more and if your friends are true they will support you nomatter what you do or how good you are at it. do what you enjoy most weither your good or bad you will get better and you will get better practice makes perfect!!!!!     :)

  8. I love volleyball.  I'm a coach and a player and it's a huge part of my life.  But guess what - do what you want without regrets.  If you don't like whatever you do this year, do the other one next year.  You're only in 7th grade and unless you want to make the USA Volleyball Team or the USA Cheerleading Team (is there one?) whatever you choose this year won't matter much.

If you still don't know, figure out who the coaches and adults are for each.  They won't make or break it for you, that's your job.  But, they can make it a lot of fun and a lot of hard work (you do like hard work, right?) and make it very rewarding.

  9. i dont know about your school but some people at my school do cheerleading and volleyball in the same season if practices interfer with each other talk to your coaches and work something out.
