Major predicament, my mom wants me to play volleyball at my new school. It's intramural, so the fact they started last Monday can't help me. I have hardly ever played volleyball, just at gym class and youth group events. All I know is the basic rules, and that I suck.

What I need is info and basic drills, because this would be a good way to meet new people, but I don't want to be known as the girl who really sucks at volleyball. Please help!

  1. i dont have any drills. but i bump against the wall of one of our barns. or i hit against the roof of the barn so it always comes back. i stand close to the barn so i cant see it. i do this when i dont have anyone to bump with.

i would start working on ur serves. since ur a beginner, u should start underhand. i would think that since ur new to volleyball, the coaches will help u. they will probably help u serve.

just practice the basics. they will teach u the rest. thats what they are there for.  hope this helps. and Good Luck!

  2. most people don't take intramurals seriously. they do it for the fun and a lot of people aren't gonna be good at it so u have nothing to worry about

  3. I agree with the other answer, intramurals are meant to help you improve, they're only looking for exceptional talent at actual tryouts and things like that, so you really have nothing to be worried about.

just remember, whenever you're passing the ball, keep yourself low to the ground (bent at the knees, NOT waist), position yourself to face where your target is (no hitting from outside your shoulder width), and don't swing your arms -- shrug them. swinging causes you to lose control of how hard you hit the ball, which obviously sends it flying.

setting is pretty self explanatory, every setter is different. just remember to keep your hands in the shape of the ball above your forehead, and extend all the way out but don't let your hands spread apart. also, the ball should never touch your palms -- that leads to penalties such as a lift, etc.

hitting is somewhat difficult to teach unless its coming straight from your coaches, because certain schools use certain approaches. when I was in higschool, we always used the 'left, right, together' approach. just remember to get yourself off the ground so you can get the ball over the net, and snap your wrist so the ball doesn't go flying to the out boundaries of the back of the court.

as for the drills, there's really nothing you need to know, they'll explain what they'd like you to do. just remember to keep hustling, walking is a big no-no, you've got to keep things moving or balls get missed.

I hope I helped! just do your best and don't stress out too much ( :
