Volleyball pools for London Olympics 2012 finalised – Volleyball news
Following the successful completion of the Olympic Qualification phase, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has revealed the pools composition for men’s and women’s volleyball teams at the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games. The information released
from the head quarters of FIVB in Lausanne, Switzerland on Tuesday.
In the men’s division, a total of twelve teams will be on board to compete for the Olympic title. The hosts Great Britain will be joined by teams from Italy, Poland, Argentina, Bulgaria, and Australia in Pool A. Likewise, Brazil, Russia, USA, Serbia, Germany,
and Tunisia will play in the Pool B.
The Women’s Olympic Volleyball Tournament will also have 12 twelve teams. The women’s tournament will follow the same pattern. Teams will be divided into two pools and each pool will be composed of six teams.
Algeria, Dominican Republic, Russia, Italy, Japan and hosts Great Britain will form Pool A, whereas Pool B will have teams from USA, China, Brazil, Korea, Turkey, and Serbia.
The men’s Olympic Qualification phase covered its span on Sunday, June 10. The process was initiated in 2011 when three teams qualified for the Olympic Games via 2011 FIVB World Cup, which took place in Japan. Russia, Poland, and Brazil captured the top
three spots at the World Cup and advanced to the Olympics.
Later on, the continental Olympic qualifiers started off. Tunisia became the first country to secure a trip to London via African Olympic Qualification Tournament. Quite similarly, US team booked the Olympic slot via North American Qualification Tournament.
Italy and Argentina joined the Olympics by winning European and South American Qualifiers, respectively.
The Continental Olympic Qualifiers were followed by World Olympic Qualifiers, which helped Serbia, Australia, Bulgaria, and Germany to reach the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Great Britain was the only team that did not put any effort to qualify for the Olympics. They earned a spot for being the host nation.
The women’s teams followed the same procedure to qualify for the Olympics. Top three teams of the 2011 FIVB Women’s World Cup were allotted Olympic berths, while rest of the teams had to go through the Continental and World Qualifiers. GB women’s squad automatically
reserved a spot for being the host of the competition.
