Volleyball question (duh)?

I have a question about trying out for a team- is it a big deal if you are short? (8th grade and i'm 5'). last year i tryed out and was ok, but i was even shorter (4' 9" probably) and didn't make the team. This year i improved and worked my butt off practicing, but will being short ruin my chances?

Thx!

  1. I don't think so. I'm in 7th grade, and I am the third shortest on my team, and I am 5'2, and my other friends, who are shorter than me, still can play as good as the taller girls can play. You just have to jump, when bumping or volleying the ball.

Good luck for your try-outs, I'm sure you'll do great :]

  2. Being short is not a problem in volleyball, though you probably won't be one of the spikers. You can still dig, bump(some people call it pass), , set, and serve and that's a big part of the game.

  3. I dont think so. If you believe in yourself that you are good and that you have confidence, you can play just as well as any tall players. I played 8th grade volleyball last year when I was in 7th grade. One of my friends was very short. She was excellent at the game, and you might not get the position you want, such as a front guard, but you can certainly play somewhere else. My friend played in the middle, because if you play in the front near the net, you usually have to be tall. I hope this helps! And remember, have confidence! Just cause you're short doesn't mean you can't play volleyball!

  4. No, I don't think so, effort, practice and perserverance are what makes one a better volleyball player.

  5. Height does have a lot to do with volleyball.  But it doesn't have everything to do with it.  It's very positioned based.  It is an extreme help for a middle hitter to be tall because of the speed of the game in that position. But at the same time, height has barely any effect on the libero position.  The overall rule is that, skill is above all.  It doesn't matter how tall somebody is, if they can't hit, block, or pass, they can't play.  And this goes both ways.  If you're really short, but have all the fundamentals, and know the game well enough, and have the right attitude, there's no chance that the coach can't keep you on the team.

I've lived your life, I grew 8 and a half inches in one year. And i'm still only 5'9" now.  But because of all the training on passing, serving, setting, and knowing the fundamentals of hitting and blocking, it didn't hold back my game. And now i'm still playing in college.  Believe in yourself and work hard.

  6. Well it actually depends on the height of your teammates. I'm short! I'm only 5'2 and I'm on the team! it's just that our tallest player is 5'6. Maybe you should practice your skills as tosser. Or the libero. I don't know what you call it in your country but it's the one with the opposite color of the jersey. Work on your biceps. 100 push-ups might do.

  7. i wont lie, it does help if you're tall, but its deffinitly not everything. like 3 girls on our varsity team are short. but u need to be an EXCELLENT passer and server, but passing is thee most important.  so get low, good platform, and dont swing when passing.  and HUSTLE, if you show you're dedicated, the coaches will want you.

    good luck!

  8. it shouldn't im 5'2 and im on starting varsity. all that matters is what your strengths are and if your more than willing to work on your weaknesses. Just stay positive and come tryouts don't let the taller people get to you..just play your game.

  9. Short is not a problem if you can make it up with other skills like digging, setting and serving.

You have to set yourself apart by being better than the tall girls at those things.

Also work on having a positive attitude and helping your teammates to make them better.

Every team needs good leaders and role models of every size.

  10. nope.

i know this girl whos 5'1 5'2 maybe and she rocks.

shes an extremely good passer and a good setter.

but the really scary thing is that shes that short and can jump to block(with reach) almost as high as I can (im 5'11)(which means she's making up 10 inches to get up there).

If you work on your vertical you may be a good hitter from the back row. Also keep

working on passing, maybe learn rolls. Also a good server is an asset to any team so work on that as well.

    how tall is your coach?

if they're tall they may want taller players.

I know all my short coaches,(like the one i have now, who plays shorter, less skilled ppl over me in the MB position b/c of my height) really are prejudiced against me, while my medium height to tall coaches really liked me.

anywho  i always end up ranting. but good luck, and i hope you make it.

  11. well in volleyball, your height does have to do alot with it. 1. because most coaches stereotype and think that a tall girl has to be good..but sometimes they are surprised that short girls can jump or things like that. so just try hard.and work on ur vertical and show them wut u got.

  12. probably not.. i'm the shortest one on our team and i'm included in the first six.. it's all about your abilities..:D

  13. it doesnt mater how tall u r im 5'0 too (13 years old 8th grade) and i made my schools team and we one all are games so it realy doesnt mater if ur tall or short

  14. Being "short" is not a good enough excuse to keep you off the volleyball team. I know a college volleyball player who's about 5' or shorter. But when she spikes a ball its like THUNDER and LIGHTNING!!!!!!!!!!! She jumps about 2 feet in the air and her spikes come down so fast and so hard.

But, if you are competitive, positive, agressive, and supportive there is no reason in the world why you shouldn't be on the team. Try to be the best you can be, NEVER EVER say anything negative, kiss the floor if thats what it takes to get to the ball if someone is scared or hesitates YOU ARE GOING TO GET YOURS, and compliment the other players on your team. SMILE, while KICKING SOME MAJOR ... butt!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. no being short is okay as long as you are really good at playing the back line and digging balls.

  16. My daughter plays HS varsity volleyball.  Now she's 5'11", but  by far the best girl on her team is probably 5'0" and she is the Libero, which is totally a defensive position.  This is an extremely important position, if you can keep the ball off the floor more than your opponent then in the long run you are going to score more points.

Also, for anybody who knows much about volleyball, boy's volleyball and girl's volleyball are really two different sports.  With boys, it's mostly about power with the girls it's more about finesse and placement of the ball.

So know matter your height, don't get discouraged, volleyball is a fantastic sport, that you can easily play the rest of your life.

  17. depends on how competetive your team is and what position you are trying out for. you would not be able to play outside hitter or middle blocker, but you may be able to play setter or libero/ds if you are good enough

  18. I don`t think it would affect how you do its all about how well you are at playing.

  19. Yes it does

i got cut from my rep team this year cause im 5'5

  20. NO WAY!

my best friend and i are on the varsity [10th grade] volleyball team and she's 5'. She's also really really good at volleyball.

but mainly i guess it depends on what type of coach you have and the quality of the other girls trying out.

    good luck! [:
