is it legal for a blocker to scream/shout something when a hitter of the opposite team is going to hit to distract him?

I've tried this technique during practice and it worked very well. Most of the hitters missed the ball or hit it outside.

I asked my coach and she said she didn't know.

  1. It is fine. As long as it's nothing inapproprate.

  2. if you do yell you should yell something productive

ex. "overhand, overhand, overhand, overhand, overhand!" if they're serving overhanded or...

ex. "serve receive, serve receive, serve receive!" when the other team is serving...

or you can tell your team mates on the bench to scream something productive

but don't just go "ahhhhhhhhhhhh ahhhhhhhhhh!" that is just pretty stupid...you might be penalized for that...but i don't know

  3. I would say it is legal, but check out this website:http://www.chsaa.org/sports/volleyball/2...

as far as i can tell, you can do anything you want, but a ref may call you on it.

  4. As a referee, I will sanction you with misconduct if I think you are yelling at the opponent.  And it depends on how blatant it is whether I just give you a warning or give a penalty.  The penalty gives the other team the ball if your team was serving and a point.

It is not legal to yell at an opponent to distract them.  Please do not believe the people above here that said it is legal.  It is legal to communicate with your team.  But if the referee thinks you are attempting to distract the opponent, it is illegal and can cause you to be removed from the match.  and will probably cost your team a point as well.

  5. well it's not illegal, but it's definately frowned upon.

think about this.. do you want your team to be known for its good sportsmanship and general skill, or to be known for its cocky annoying yells that sometimes throw off a hitter? i absolutely hate it when teams yell when you serve and hit, it shows that they're scared that their skill alone won't win them the game.

so, i really wouldn't recommend it, because refs don't like it, other teams don't like it, and if your teams like mine, your team won't like it. it's rude, and cowardly.

i'm sorry for being like this, it just really angers me when people do that kind of thing. when did volleyball become about anything but the purity and skill of the sport? it's upsetting.

  6. yelling is allowed, as long as you are relaying information to your own team or cheering. here is an alternative. when the pass is tight, stomp. the other team will think that you are going up to pound the ball straight down, when in reality you just jump. this also leaves the other team on their heels and makes them look unskilled. i have found that if your blocking and you see the hitter going line, yelling "line" will sometimes make them hit right into your block because they think the the outside is going to block line. try these in practice before including them in your game play.

  7. as long as you yell something to help your team like outside middle weak just yell where the hit is coming from but be a little obnoxious (ex: middle middle middle middle middle) if you just scream or yell you could be carded for unsportsmanlike conduct
