Question:

Volleyball "Elbowpads"???

I just joined this volleyball camp about a few weeks ago and I've realized that without my kneepads I would be terribly scraped up!!! I'm starting to think that there must be some sort of elbow pads because my elbows are getting scraped up as if I'm supposed to have something like kneepads on my elbows! I don't want anything gigantic like kneepads that make me look weird but something that has just the same protection as kneepads... Is there anyone that knows what I'm talking about??? If so, please tell where to get something... (I get scraped nearly everytime when I try to "pancake")

  1. no there are no volleyball elbow pads but there are sleeves or protectors......not has big or as noticeable

  2. actually i think its really weird that your getting scraped up! you shouldnt be, maybe your doing something wrong??? but if i were you there are mueller sleeves they are thin and im sure they would protect best of luck!

  3. there are no elbow pads. they would have the potential of ruining your passes. it would also be much harder to set with them on, as wel as uncomfortable to play in, no matter what you are doing. if you are doing a pancake correctly, you're elbow should be facing up, not down towards the floor. a pancake is when you slide with your arm out with your palm down.

  4. Nope, there are no elbow pads.

When you pancake, you shouldn't scrape your elbows on the floor btw.

Your hand should go kinda straight to the floor, but kinda angled.

  5. there are no elbow pads.

you have to bend your elbows to play.

if you are trying to pass and the ball even touches the pad it could ruin your pass. It could be even tougher if youare the setter.

with time playing volleyball comes durability.

you probably would not find the same protection as a kneepad without the bulkyness considering that the bulk is what protects.

well good luck and keep going. dont let a few scraches get in the way.

  6. Sorry, but there isn't such thing as "elbow pads" for volleyball.  There is a technique to a pancake.  you shouldn't be hitting your elbows.  ask your coach about a different technique for you, if you keep scraping them up.  If you ask your coach, you might be able to get a BRACE for your elbows at sporting good stores, which will protect them until you master the technique.  take note that this could hinder your passing or setting, so be careful.  ask your coach first.  maybe find a different way to dive, instead of pancaking.  try a barrel roll, or diving to the side.  after awhile, your elbows will toughen up and it won't hurt anymore.  its kind of like digging a hard spike, once you do it for a week or so, your arms are almost "immuned" to it, if you get what im saying.

    I hope this helped!

  7. The key to doing the pancake without getting scraped up is to not touch the floor until just before you make contact with the ball.  I know that is obvious, but you should try to dive higher from the ground.  (Not a lot higher, but it sounds like you are going in very low and making contact with the ground well before you hit the ball.)   That would lead to floor burn.

You might even try something as simple as wrist sweat bands.

  8. your elbows wont get scraped or scratched or anything like that if you're diving/digging the right way you really dont even need kneepads but you should wear them anyway to protect your knees if you fall the wrong way. usually when you dive/dig you wont land on your elbows.

  9. I can tell you that there ARE/were "volleyball elbow pads"...

one site I found said the product has been discontinued :-<

    http://www.weplay.com/Asics/volleyball/p...

    http://supports4less.com/brace-type/voll...

I was wearing them (with different brand name) when playing volleyball in college **about 20 years ago**, and spending most of my time on "dirt court" (out door, no pavement).

I was playing middle blocker/hitter and there was no libero at that time and I was playing middle back who covers from corners to corners. Elbow pads were needed so badly when diving.

I understand that most of answers talked about doing palm down pancake, but you could only pop the ball up-straight when palm-down flat on the floor. Sometimes you need to dive to the far left and "pass" the ball to the setter who's in front-right setting position, which would be the scenario you would have to twist your left palm/fist so that it is sending the ball to the setter with enough strength. When doing that, you would have to let your left elbow touch the floor (and roll over to stand after the dive), and wearing elbow pads would be very helpful.

Having said that, I haven't seen any player in the States wearing elbow pad, maybe simply because such product is not easily available. About 80% of my games were played indoor, with the rest on sand or grass courts, and I haven't seen anyone getting hurt so badly as I used to get on dirt court.

Have fun with volleyball. If you are willing to dive, you have the potential to be the best player on your team.
