While i was watching my high school volleyball game yesterdasy there was something i dont think the ref on the standing area was supposed to do but did. She pulled her hands out into the playing area and grabbed the ball right be4 our team was going to spike it. Was this and illegal move? and what sort of rule is there for this?

  1. i play volleyball and that has never happened to our team before.  maybe your team passed the ball too many times or hit the ball illegally or touched the net or something so the ball would go to the other team or maybe your team just didn't hear the ref blow the whistle

  2. there had to be some type of illegal play before.

  3. she cant do that unless play had already stopped

  4. If the referee purposed grabbed the ball, I hope that the one of the two referees had already blown the whistle to end the play.  If one of them had whistled, then the play is dead and the referee could just be trying to stop someone from getting hurt.  Or getting a card.  (I refereed a match years ago.  I called team A for a lift on the 3rd team contact.  Team B shanked it back over the net.  Team A passed, set and then spiked the ball.  Team B was celebrating because they had won the play.  Team A spiked it into the crowd of Team B players.  I was whistling and yelling for them to stop.  They did not stop.  The lift call made the score 3-2 in favor of team B.  The yellow card on the player that hit the ball 10 seconds after the first whistle made the score 4-2.  And the yellow card on the coach made it 5-2.)  A card can be given if the play is over and the player still plays the ball.

If the referee grabbed the ball and the ball was not out of play, then the referees should decide if the referee actually interfered with play.  If they decide that the referee grabbing the ball did affect the play, a playover should be done.  See rule 8.4.2f below.

  5. I do not think that they are supposed to do that unless they called the ball dead and then she grabbed it so that their was no confusion. We had a girl grab the ball to but it was coming at her head so I could understand why she grabbed it because it was already out and it would have knocked her off the stand but other than that I do not think that they are supposed to grab the ball. ( oh and for the record the ball she grabbed was from the other team so it was not are error)

  6. umm it is possible that the ball went behind the antennae that sticks up over the net which is out of bounds no matter where it lands...but if not I have no clue why the ref did it...the ref shouldn't have touched the ball unless of course it did go behind the antennae, but even then the ref should have just let the ball drop or whistle the play down.

and if there was no reason for grabbing the ball it should have been a reserve...this could have been a very bad ref or inexperienced

  7. most likly it should be a redo because i play varsity and that happend to me and i said i was gunna  hit that and she said o  i didnt thin k you could get it so i just did and then next time our setter set tha ball there again and i hit it but she still thought about takeing tha ball!
