  1. the volley lines are the bounds, you can't step over the serve line or you get a foot fall, make sure to keep your passes and sets straight so they saty in and play off of the net as much as possible.

  2. Middle school rules are governed by NFSHSA rules.

I will give you some highlights.

There are 3 hits on a side.  The block does not count as one of the team hits.

The server may serve from anywhere from behind the endline.  If they touch the line, it is called a foot fault.

The back row may not attack the ball from on or in front of the 10 foot line.  That is called a back row attack.  If the back row player blocks the ball, it is an illegal back row block.

The Libero wears a different colored shirt than the rest of the team.  They are a defensive specialist.  They can replace any back row player.  They may serve this year.

A player may hit the ball more than 1 time if it is the first team contact and it is one attempt to play the ball.

They may not lift or carry the ball.  The contact has to come out clean without spending too much time on the arms or hands.

The games are to 25 points.  They use rally scoring.  That means the a point is scored on every play that does not end in a playover.  Old style volleyball was sideout scoring.  You had to serve to score a point.  Some matches may be 2 out of 3 or they may be 3 out of 5.

I hope this gives you enough information to get you going.  I have included a link to a rules comparison sheet.  It shows the differences in the rules between club (USAV), women's college (NCAA), and the junior high (NFSHSA) rules.
