I am going into the 9th grade, i played volleyball in 7th and 8th grade, however i never got my overhand serve down, i always underhand serve. So i need some tips on how to get it over the net, and actually be able to serve overhand.

I also would like some other tips from volleyball players out there. I love to play volleyball, i just am not that good at it.

  1. omg i love volleyball and i used to have the same problem but i now can serve to at least get over the net.

Well, first your toss has to be good. you have to throw it high enough and straight up as possible. dont throw it up too too high and dont throw it too low.

okay, now when you throw the ball up, make sure you bring your arm back and when you swing make sure you extend your arm as straight as you can get it. and you have to be able to hit the ball with a straight arm. that is what ive learned.

When you swing, make sure you hit the ball with the palm of your hand and make sure you have a lot of power. when you hit the volleyball, make sure you swing through the ball. dont stop your hand when you hit. swing all the way through down to your side...make any sense?

practice this. if you have a flat driveway and your parents dont mind, practice serving against the garage door.

if your not able too, go to a gym and practice and if a net is up...practice serving over the net. if a net isn't up, serve against the wall or something. if you can find a better idea to practice serving, then do it...because some people always feel weird practicing in front of a lot of people which is totally understandable.

if possible, try some volleyball camps in your area if possible. or after volleyball practice, talk with the coach and ask her if she could help you a little longer with your serving.

well good luck with volleyball, keep practicing...its a REALLY FUN sport!!! and make sure you keep practicing your bumps, sets, and spikes. blocking and everything else needed in volleyball.

  2. when u trhow it up amke sure u hit it with the boneright about ur palm...u no where emos but them selves where the veins are

  3. The key is to keep your elbow up and step/swing through the ball.  Hold the ball with your non serving hand out in front of your head, left foot forward (assuming you're a righty).  Pull your serving arm back like you are pulling a bow and arrow while keeping your elbow high (head level).  Lift the ball with your left arm and toss it only maybe two feet strait up (not back toward you).  Then step into the ball with your right foot and swing through the ball.  Use your bodyweight for additional strength.  Make sure you contact the ball in front of your swinging shoulder and start working on just making good contact and hitting the ball far.  Once you have the timing and strength to hit the ball enough distance/height, then work on placement.

  4. i had the same problem...here are some simple steps...

    1. hold the ball in your non-dominant hand extending your arm straight out. {like you're handing the ball to someone}

    2. then, have your dominant foot in front of your other and have it point straight to the net. {where you point your foot will depend on where it goes}

    3. put all your weight on your front foot toss the ball it the air {not too high, but high enough that you have time to hit it with your dominant hand}

These are fool proof instructions. I went to a volleyball camp for the summer to help me polish my skills. perhaps if you still have trouble, you can attend a camp.

Hopefully this has helped you. I also had alot of trouble with overhand serving. However, if you practice and set small goals, you can get it over the net.

  5. I played it my  6th,7th, 8th, 9th and now 10th grades.

Well U might just want to practice trowing it up in the air and getting ur hand there when the call comes downn.

try it against a walll so it will come right back at u.

then u want to work on ur feet when u throw it up put all ur weight on ur back left foot and then bring it up when serve the ball.

Just practice those and u should become pretty good.

that is what i dooo. and it is pretty hard serve.

  6. Overhand serving is essential when you get to the high school level. Here are some tips:

    1. TAKE YOUR TIME

The official rule is that you have 8 seconds to perform your serve. This is actually an eternity. Rushing your serve will only s***w up your routine, and cause you to lose serve and lose the point! So wait for the whistle!

    2. CREATE A ROUTINE

Your routine is perhaps the most important aspect of your “pre-serve”.Decide how many bounces, slaps, etc. you will do before going into the serving motions. This will give you some familiarity and make your serve consistent.

This also includes knowing how far you are from the service line (“serves go over, feet don’t!”)

    3. CHOOSE YOUR VICTIM

Picking a target on the floor will keep you from serving “out”.

Avoid good back row players, such as the libero as your victim. Find a possible hole on the floor (ex. in the middle of a cup formation)

    4. THE TOSS

This is the most important aspect of the actual serve.

Bring the ball in both hands in front of your body.

Toss with both hands and do not toss between your legs!

    5. FANCY FOOTWORK

Stand so that your feet are about shoulder width apart, with your foot the same side as your hitting arm slightly ahead of the opposite foot. Check: Are your feet/body facing your victim? Are your feet far enough from the service line?

6.THE TOSS CONTINUEDThrow the ball about 4 feet to double your height. Toss straight up- too far ahead/behind will throw off your serve.

    7. CONTACTING THE BALL

    Lead with your elbow.

Make solid contact on the top of the ball.

Don’t poke the ball-put some muscle into it!

NEVER, EVER fist the ball. Cast your palm as open as possible for the most surface area.

While contacting the ball, step with the foot opposite your hitting arm.

    8. BODY MOVEMENTS

This will give you the most balance and propel your body.

Pull your non-hitting arm down, and let your hips twist when you hit the ball.

    9. FOLLOW THROUGH

After hitting the ball, snap your wrist.

This will give you the top spin you want to make your serve difficult to receive. Drag your foot -the same side as your hitting arm-because you cannot take 2 steps.

I'll go through the other basic components, you might know, just so you get the right motions.

    PASSING:

    1. Feet comfortably shoulder width apart, knees bent (get low!)

    2. Cross 1 hand over the other at a 45 degree angle and match your thumbs up flat.

    3.Be sqaure to your target

    4. Hit the ball with your forearms (it might hurt a little)

    VOLLEY:

1.Hands up, index, and thumbs making a triangle

    2. When the ball comes, absorb it, contacting with the pads of your fingers.

    3. Push out, evenly with both hands.

    SPIKE

    1. Approach left, right together.

    2. Drag your arms up from behind and bend your knees.

    3. Jump and bring your arms up.

    4. Bring your elbow back, and lead with it to contact the ball.

    5. Contact the ball open palm (flat surface) and on top of the ball.

    6. Follow through.

Spiking is very similar to serving, if you can do the serve, you should master the spike. Best of luck with volleyball!
