  1. You do not really want to announce it.  You do not want your opponent to know where the set is going.  If you are on the volleyball court, you should expect the set.

  2. I am a setter....15 plus years.....you need to tell your hitters where and what your setting on broken plays and on free balls. Email me if you like.

  3. As you grow more experience with volleyball as a setter it becomes natural for your team to know how you set, who your most comfortable setting to and you also will bond with teammates knowing what kind of set's they prefer whether a 1 or 2 in the middle or on the net for an outside. During practices while your doing hitting lines or something you can ask your hitter's where you like it. It gives the hitters and you some more communication on the court when you know what's their comfort zone and they know your's.

My primary spot is not a setter but a strong side hitter, but I do play setter when my coach asks me to, so we can get more plays in. I do jump set's instead of regular set's when it's needed. If you ever need tip's on those you can always e-mail me but other than that I cant really give you true setter secret tip's since setter isn't my main position to begin with.

    - Here on our team, setter's are considered the team captain because they initially have a lot of weight on their shoulder's, so keep at it your team really depends on you. =)

  4. here are some setting tips for you...

    1) if you don't want to surprise your teammates when you set to them, give them a heads up such as using hand signals before your team receive a serve.

    2) try as many kind of set plays during practice so that you can get used to your hitters and they can get used to your setting.

    3) communicate with your hitters. for example, ask them if your set is too high or too low for them to hit, or ask them if your set tempo suits their approach timing.

    4) watch other setters' (from other teams) style of play and try to visualize yourself setting like them (good ones only).

    5) practice more & improve your stamina because in my experience, the setter is the one who has to do all the running in the court especially when the first pass to the setter does not reach you accurately.

  5. if u know wat number ur setting then juss yell thatv out then shell knowe

  6. Your backup setter should have been ready for a ball no matter what, haha.

It's not your fault she was surprised and wasn't ready to hit.

Just explain to her you can and will back set from time to time, so she should be ready to do her approach.

Your teammates will get used to your method of setting after practicing with them for a while.

Or maybe you can come up with hand signals for certain plays.  Some of the teams I've played with do that.

The best is when you really trick the other team (if you have a strong back set).  My grade 12 setter (she was an amazing player) did a play I almost wasn't ready for! (I played right side).  Someone had passed the ball all the way near the left hitter at the net.  My setter ran to the ball, and back set it all the way to right side.  Luckily I was watching and was ready to approach, and just killed the ball, as the blockers on the other team weren't ready for it.

So, lesson for the other player...she should be ready!  Don't hesitate to tell her that next time, as you want your hitters to actually HIT the ball!

  7. before you do a back set yell out 'c'.
