Volleyball setting location codes?

Can anyone explain the volleyball setting location codes? I know a "1" is a quick middle hit and a "4" is a quick outside hit, but I hear folks talking about a "31". Please explain.

Some teams use a two-digit code with the first digit being the location on the net (1 at the left and 9 on the right) and the second digit being the height (1 is a quick set, 3 is a play set, 9 is a very high set.)

Others teams use a combination of words and numbers like "off two middle" and "on 1 out." In that case the "off/on" indicates whether the ball should be away from the net (off) or near the net (on) while the number indicates set height (1 is quick, 2 is play, 3 is high) and the "middle/out" indicates the location.

Numbering systems are very different.  Some use single digits as you said a 1 or a 4.  Some use the double digits as in the 31.  Some use colors.  Some use single digits to describe all three hitters.  (Play #1 means the outside hitter gets this set, the middle gets this set and the right side gets this set.)  

The 31 you are talking about is the use of the 2 digit code.  The first digit is the zone.  Zone 1 starts at the left side hitter near the antenna.  It is broken into 9 zones.  Every 3 feet or 1 meter is another zone.  Zone 2 is about 3 feet or 1 meter inside the left side antenna.  Zone 3 is about 6 feet from the antenna.  The setter is in Zone 6 and the right side hitter is Zone 9 when they get the set near the antenna.

The second digit is the height of the set.  1 is the quick set.  2 is a little higher and so on.  Most teams only get to a 5 for the second digit, which is the highest set.  

Your 31 set is about halfway between the antenna and the setter as fast as you can get it out there.
