Volleyball special: Stacy Sykora of USA becomes the Athlete of the year 2010
The 2010 volleyball season brought a lot of luck and success for American indoor female player, Stacy Sykora. She demonstrated wonderful sports skills and proved her endeavours many a times. Sykora played a vital role in U.S. team’s achievements. The hard
work paid off and Sykora captured the great honour of being named for Female ‘Athlete of the Year 2010’ in United States. Besides, she has been nominated for ‘Woman of the Year’ in another category of United States Olympic Committee Sports by USA Volleyball.
The gold medal victory at the FIVB World Grand Prix was the major accomplishment of American team in year 2010. Sykora was associated with team as libero. She proved to be a tough defence expert and absorbed many of the unstoppable spikes of opponents. The
U.S. team remained un-beaten for 11 matches, in which Sykora demonstrated excellent digging and diving on the court. Likewise, the bronze medal victory in Pan American Cup was also credited to incredible defence of Stacy Sykora.
Quite recently, the U.S. team settled for fourth position in the FIVB Women’s World Championship, while Sykora captured Best Libero’s position in tournament. Sykora was a part of American team in 31 matches in the running season. She played in 115 sets and
proved her steel in the game. According to DataVolley statistics, Sykora compiled 449 digs. Sykora also earned the Best Digger’s award at the 2004 Olympic Games.
Stacy Sykora was simply overjoyed with the sense of achievement. She commented,
“What an honor. First and foremost, I would like to thank USA Volleyball for putting up with me all of these years. I honestly believe that individual awards can never be achieved without a great support system. I have been fortunate enough to have had
great teammates, coaches, family and friends aside me down this long journey of a career. I feel very honored to be named USA Volleyball SportsWoman of the Year. Thank you very much.”
Sykora most deserved this position, that’s what U.S. team's head coach and other members thought of her. The head coach of U.S. Team, Hugh McCutcheon acknowledged her hard work and dedication. He said, “Stacy had a great season this year. She works hard,
she's a great competitor, and she makes those around her better. She's becoming the complete package.”
