Volleyball special: Volleyball is the most popular sport in Cuba
Volleyball is the top sport in Caribbean country Cuba. During the past few years, the challenging sport of volleyball has grown remarkably in the country. There is huge fan following in Cuba and the game is played in every nook
and cranny. Quite recently, the annual elections for the best national teams and athletes of Cuba were held, which revealed volleyball as the most awarded discipline of the country. Volleyball proved to be best team sport for a consecutive year in Cuba.
Cuban men’s national volleyball team represented the country at various international events during 2010 season and gained popularity all over the world. The gifted head coach, Oralando Samuel Blackwood backed up the team in under-pressure
situations and led them to success. Cuba’s men’s national volleyball team performed amazingly well in the 2010 FIVB World Championship in Italy and qualified for the final showdown with Brazil. Ultimately, the team settled for second position as Brazil took
away the gold-medal. Cuban team got hold of the silver-ware.
Likewise, the Caribbean squad actively participated in the 2010 FIVB World League and clinched fourth slot in the ranking. They proved their steal in the game and defeated some of best teams of the world. They demonstrated a stellar
performance at the inaugural Youth Olympics Games in Singapore and captured gold medal. Cuban Beach Volleyball duos also sparked on the scene and claimed twelve medals during the Beach Volleyball NORCECA Circuit.
This year, Robertlandy Simon settled for the position of most outstanding player in men’s section, while Kenia Carcaces appeared as the most outstanding player in the women’s squad. The Cuban Volleyball Federation recognised the
good work of players and their respective coaches. The men’s team setter Raydel Hierrezuelo, Yoana Palacio, Yoandy Leal were on the list of best players in Cuba. In juniors’ category, Yonder García and Yassel Perdomo performed exquisitely and were placed in
the top-ten players’ list. Yoendry Kindelán, Sergio González and Kirenia Ballar were tagged as the best beach volleyball players in Cuba. Rodolfo Fernandez supervised the junior volleyball teams as head coach. Moreover, 21-year-old Fernando Hernandez, and
18-year-old Rosanna Giel, became the best rookies.
