Volleyball terminologies from O to R
Volleyball is a cool sport but cooler still is the volleyball jargon. If you cant look cool playing it, you can look cool speaking it. Don’t know how to do that even? No worries, we will give you a complete dose of the most commonly used volleyball terminologies
that will educate you and qualify you to become an expert in volleyball lingo.
We will start your education with the Os. The first volleyball O you should know about is the Off-side Block. This is the player that stands next to the net and is positioned away from the attack of the opposing team. Another ‘Off’ in the Os is the Off-Speed
Hit. As the name suggests, this is a method of hitting the ball in such a way that it has average speed but a lot of spin on it. This is a good attacking shot which a player masters after considerable practice. An Overhand Serve is something else that the
players need to have prowess at. It is when the server throws the ball up in the air and hits it towards the opponent’s court, before the ball falls down to shoulder height. Such a serve has quite a lot of speed on it and is hard to break.
Leaving the overwhelmingly technical Os behind, lets talk about some of the interesting Ps. Did you know we have a Pancake in volleyball too? This one is not edible unfortunately, rather, it is a defensive strategy and a very good one at that. A Pancake
is a heroic attempt to save the ball from hitting the court by diving and sliding a hand under it. The ball hits the back of the hand and shoots up back into the air.
As interesting as the Pancake is, even more captivating is the Paint Brush. The move gets its name from the similarity between itself and a paint stroke. However, do not be deceived, it is not as easy to perform. The player makes this move in order to confuse
the opposing team. It looks as if the ball is going to come hard and fast, when in effect, it has been hit softly and does not come at speed. On the contrary, a Power Tip is a ball that will approach the opponents at speed and force because it has been sent
over by the attackers in such a way. The defense has to be on their toes and vigilant to thwart this kind of power play.
One more ball that travels with great velocity and force is the one hit by a Prince or Princess of Whales. As is apparent by the sarcasm in the term, he or she is the only player that knows how to make this hit. Those new to the game of volleyball and who
have not mastered the different techniques with which to hit the ball are frequently dubbed with this title.
Leaving royalty behind, lets come onto the Rs. No we haven’t forgotten the Qs, but there aren’t any that would significantly interest you. However, an R of the utmost importance is a Red Card. As in other games, it is given in the most extreme situations,
mostly when a player has made a severe breach of discipline or done anything against the rules of the game. A Red Card display may result in player disqualification, loss of serve or a point. A much better volleyball R is a Rainbow. It is a shot which is made
in an attempt to get the ball over the defenders so that it reaches an empty space at the back of the court.
It is said that every rainbow has a pot of gold in the end, this one however just has a plain and simple ‘The End’. This session should equip you with enough volleyball lingo to survive till the next when one where your education will continue from S onwards.
