I played volleyball last year on the grade7/8 volleyball team. I hurt my thumb a couple of times in the same spot from volleying the ball but it didn't go swollen or anything so no big deal. But after and big spike I did.it well.swollen and hurt a lot..But after checking with the doc. he said it will be better in about 3 weeks..and the doc was right it was all better!! It look normal and better as can be. But every time I play volleyball and volley the ball I hurt my thumb but it doesn't swell up or anything it just hurts the same spot where I injured it before. The spot that hurts is the knuckle in the thumb, and down to the wrist. I'm thinking of asking my doctor for advice about the athletic tape, But I'd like to hear from you guys first.

What do you think about the athlectic tape? Should I talk to my coach? Just buy the athletic tape and use it. Could anyone show/tell me how to wrap the tape around my thumb?

I just hope that because of my thumb that my coach won't let me play..

  2. Have you had this x-rayed?  You could have a hairline fracture or just a deep muscle bruise.  Either will heal fine with time, but who needs the pain if you keep re-injuring it?  Taping it is a good idea, just be sure that you don't wrap too tightly.  Definitely let your coach know-it shouldn't get you benched if you are already a strong player.

  3. I've been playing vball for 4 yrs now and i really think you should just tape it up before playing. Wrap it around ur wrist a couple of times and then go up around your thumb. This shouldn't affect ur playing at all, every game I play in at least one of my teammates has something taped up. Tell ur coach he should show u how to tape it up, it not that big of a deal. Good Luck.

  4. It really depends how exactly you hurt it but going back to your doctor and possibly getting an x-ray is probably a good idea.

I hurt my thumb a couple seasons ago (it was bent backwards while blocking) and I taped it for almost a full year every time I played.  It feels fine now but for that year it was always tender...the tape really helped.
