Question:

Volleyball troubles?

for 7th and 8th grade i have been a setter for volleyball

i know i'm not the best player on the team but after a

bit of practice i'd say that i'm decent. this year i am in

a summer league before school starts but the coach is

going to be my coach for the school year too. i really

want to be a setter, which i did for three games, but the

last game she had me as a libero. which i guess is fine

but can anyone tell me the plus to being a libero? because

all i see right now is not a lot of playing time.

the other thing was that she had a girl who isnt all that great

at volleyball (alright lets just face it, shes the worst one on the

team) being the other libero. so does that mean i suck too?

advice would be helpful especially if you were a libero/setter/

or just played volleyball in general. thanks!

  1. I'm sure you don't suck. Libero is a great position. I'm the opposite of that, I only play front row, but I've played for awhile. Liberos are fast. They have to be the best passers, that's their job. They are very aggressive and have to be extremely vocal when calling the ball. All positions are important to the sport. There isn't a single position that is less important. Liberos are great! Maybe your coach will convert you to libero instead, if that's what you're great at then try it out.

  2. Being the setter is a big part of the team..the attacker counts on you to get the ball to them every time. You were probably  put in that postion because that's where the coach thought you would do best at.

Being the libero is kind of an advantage because your the one that usually gets the ball first when it comes over the net and the back of the court is where most players try to aim it for...so the coach probably put you there because she can count on you and she probably thinks that's the spot on the court that your good at also....and all it takes is practice, practice, practice...all i can say is just do your best.

  3. no that doesnt mean you suck. but if you want to be a setter ask your coach after practice to help you and if it is possible that you could be a setter. and if you have two liberos thats going to be really hard.but if you would rather be a libero and the best one at that ask her for help with that too.  im not a libero or setter im a middle but i hope i helped:)

  4. You shouldn't be discouraged.  Being a libero is a very important job for your team.  Maybe your coach feels that you can do a better job being a libero than a setter, but then again, it was only for one day so you never know.  It doesn't matter where you play or how much you play, it is the quality you give every time.  If she sees that you are improving in your setting then she might put you back.  You have to have a lot of heart and trust your coach in that she thinks that you will contribute more being a libero.  If there's a girl who is also a libero and she sucks, that does not mean that you suck too.  I know how you feel because i'm an outside/middle and my coach wants to turn me into a setter and it's not because I'm sucking at my position(s), its because we are lacking a setter and the team really needs another one.  She feels that I will help the team by being the setter in this upcoming season.  Don't get discouraged...practice hard and good luck!

  5. It definitely doesnt mean you suck!

My school is in a summer league right now and my coaches have been throwing girls in all sorts of positions. They are using it as a chance to see us in different situations. You never know, someone might have a hidden talent =)

So your coach might be doing the same thing.

Or she might see you going farther as a libero.

Dont give up on setting. Just keep working on it in your own time or even ask your coach to stay after and work with you. Its always a plus to be able to set.

Just talk to your coach but just know that it doesnt mean you suck! =)

  6. if she chose you for libero, that says that you are someone she can count on. if you think about it, liberos are VERY important. most of the time when the ball comes over the net, YOU are the one to pass it. if you get a good pass, there is a better chance that the setter will set a good set, and the hitter will have a good hit. if you want to be setter, talk to you coach after practice. but make sure you don't go up to her and say "i really want to be setter! can i?" remember, its HER team. im not a setter or libero, ibut i did have to play back row sometimes, and i realized that liberos can control a lot of the game.
