school is starting next week and i'm going to be a freshman. And over the summer i did a volleyball camp at my highschool. They did teach us how to serve-receive, but they didn't really explain it well. And i really want to make the team, because during 8th grade i practiced in my backyard. But i need to know how to serve-receive cuz thats like the main positions in volleyball, and im afraid if i don't know it, they won't put me on the team. So i need to know eveything about serve receive! thanks =D

  1. In games played at mid-advanced level, each player gets assigned a "base" position no matter where the rotation puts her. Some teams only do base for front row players, and some do base for all players.

For example, if you are a middle blocker/middle hitter, your base (when in front row) is front-middle. So when your team is serving, you switch to your base as soon as the server contacts the ball. When your team is serve-receiving, your coach would have to make the call to switch some players if they are not passing, or switch no player so that everyone focuses on getting the first pass (and set and hit) done before switching. By the time the ball gets back to your opponent's side, all/most players should be switched to her base position.

Middle blocker would usually get replaced by the libero when she rotates to the back row, or gets assigned to middle-back when in back row. Outside hitter (Power) would usually get assigned to left side (front or back), and the setter and the opposite (could be your 2nd best setter, the right side hitter when you run 5-1...) should be assigned to right side (zone #1 and #2).

  2. you could try asking your coach to re-explain it, read some books from former players, or i found this website to help me with my volleyball tryout: http://www.active.com/images/newsletters...

  3. Don't worry, they will explain the serve receive positions during try-outs. The most important thing is that you know how to move to the ball and pass. If you are able to run after balls and hit the floor most coaches will take you. They don't expect incoming freshman to know the serve receive positions as far as I know.

However, most serve receives are done with 3 passers. The middle passer is a little further back than the two side passers, but not that much (this distance varies among coaches). At lower levels the serve receivers may be just the 3 back-row players, though at higher levels teams stack their serve receivers so that the strongest passers can server receive all the way around (usually the two outside hitters and the libero). (4 year varsity, going into college, male)

  4. Receiving- back behind the spike line and a couple steps back.

Serving- Is blocing at the net and then you move back a bit.

Hope this helps good luck at try outs!
