Question:

Volleyball tryouts...?

I am currently a 14 year old at 6'0. There is a freshmen volleyball coach at my school and she has asked me if I am interested in playing freshmen year.

I have never played on an actual team before but I know most of the basics.....like passing, setting, hitting, ect. However I still consider myself average when it comes to playing the game.

They are after me because I am super tall but I am afraid that when I go to tryouts in August they will see that even thought I am so tall, I am not an excellent player.

What should I expect at tryouts?

What chance do you think I have at making atleast the freshmen team?

  1. Wow 6 foot is really tall for a girl haha. They most likely asked you, because they think you have potential. Sure your not good yet, but sounds like your going to be. At tryouts don't expect to be one of the better players, but I think you'll make it if they see you hustle, and trying really hard.

  2. All coaches say, "you can't teach height", which is why they always try to draft tall players and get them trained. Short players do have their advantage, but that would be a different story.

If you think you are an average player, chance is the coach also knows it, so don't worry about whether there is anything you don't know... you will be drafted anyway.

The key is that you want to be good and still you want to be better. You want to give your heart to volleyball, and you are **willing** to listen to your coach.

During the summer, you may sign up with a few summer camps to get yourself into coached games, and go to open gyms for some free-style playing... if possible. You may also use this forum to search historic Q/A, and put in more questions as they come up.

    Have fun playing volleyball.

  3. I have been in your place before. I am only 5"7 but I am still tall for my age. : )

They will probably make you run laps or something and then do Volleyball suicides. Now I do not know if this is only something that my high school does, or if it is an actual thing. Then they will probably give ya a breather, then you will pepper some, or hit it. You REALLY want to practice hitting, especially if you are tall and are going to try out for hitter. But you need to decide if you want to be a middle hitter, a left hitter, or a right hitter.

Anymore questions feel free to contact me. : )

    P.S. GOOD LUCK!!!

  4. i think that you should still tryout

you already know the basic stuff and if you think that you are not that good of a player if you make the team your coach will shape and mold you into a better one

  5. not that coaches don't like their average and below average height girls, but they normally make it a point to recruit as many tall players as they can. tall players make offense much easier to execute, while the shorter players make the defense more easily done.

i think that your coach will still want you to be on the team even if your skills are only average. my good friend annie is extremely tall, around your height, but she has a lot of work to do on her game. the coach believes that when the time comes, she will be an amazing player. for now, she's been practicing and working really hard to improve. and that is what you should do if you consider yourself an average player.

at tryouts, the coach will most likely do some drills to test your basic skills. at my team's tryouts, we did several of these to test out what new people could/could not do and their potential to improve. at the end, we played a game to see if people knew how to transition from offense to defense. make sure you know how to bump well because bumping is one of the most important skills in volleyball. some other skills that will be tested will be setting, serving, digging, hitting, and blocking.

since your tryouts are in August, you have the entire summer to train and work hard. if there are any open gyms you should most definitely go to them and continue to work on your game. if there isn't an open gym, talk to the coach about it. you have a good chance of making the freshman team as long as you work hard at this sport.

hope i helped! good luck :]

  6. I was recruited as a tall person who had never really played volleyball much. Don't be afraid that they will expect alot out of you. Like the one guy said."you can't teach height". they will want to teach you everything else. Don't be discouraged by your lack of skill. They will work with what you have got. Over the season they may even spend alot of extra time grooming you to be a better player because your height gives you added potential. All you really need to bring with you to volleyball is a good attitude and a good work ethic. If they are looking at you as a freshman, they are thinking about you as a senior. Just think about what can be accomplished in four years with a good attitude and alot of hard work. I started playing vball my freshman year of highschool and I still love it after highschool, four years of club, four years of college and 5 years of coaching. I hope you love it too. Don't forget to have fun. The better i get, even though working at it can be frustrating, the more fun I have. yo may even make the JV team liek I did, my freshman year. If you really want to make a good impression, as the coach what you can do up until tryouts or how you can get a leg up. Instruction in proper form is really important when you begin. And if you haven't had formal training it may be better to forget whatever you think you know about volleyball now and start over with real instruction. Someone who is on a club team or highschool team aught to be able to help you out. Best of luck

  7. holy c**p 14 and 6'0. That right there is a huge plus. As long as you show that you have a good defensive foundation and you ur motivated u'll be fine. Teams always need freshmen. Soo just practice, go to the park with your volleyball and practice ur skills against a wall and u'll b fine.
