Volleyball update: Trentino BetClic secures the title of Men’s Club World Championship for another year
Italy’s Trentino BetClic posted 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 20-25, and 25-15) victory over PGE Skra Belchatow of Poland in final match of 2010 FIVB Men’s Club World Championship on Tuesday, December 21. The thrilling volleyball campaign successfully completed its
run in Doha, Qatar. The Emirates state facilitated 14 volleyball teams (8 men’s and 6 women’s) from 15-21 December. In the men’s division, the final showdown was all-European affair. Quite interestingly, the last year’s finalists came head-to-head in the final
encounter. The defending champions Trentino BetClic launched their authority on the arch rivals PGE Skra Belchatow and secured the title for second year in a row.
With this particular victory, Trentino BetClic became the first club volleyball team to capture two world titles back to back.
First Set
The two teams entered the court with a lot of plans. Trentino BetClic was ready to rumble, while the competitor side seemed full of ambition to stage a stellar performance. Italian side opened the match with Jan Stokr’s heavy shots. The captain of Trentino
BetClic, Matey Keziyski formed good combination with Stokr and got hold of the game. They hit the spikes with perfect timing, which promptly raised Italy’s score. On the other hand, Poles reacted and hit back aggressively. Mariusz Wlazly was the main weapon
of PGE Skra. He found the rare gaps in opponents’ half and managed to steal points with his unstoppable spikes. The point-to-point battle continued and ultimately the game came to an even point at 16-all.
Afterwards, both sides tried to break the tie and take lead in the game. The exchange of long rallies created a great vibe in the game. However, Trentino’s squad hit better shots and raised the score to 20. PGE Skra trailed behind with a margin of 4 points.
In the meantime, Italian side found the perfect rhythm and clawed its way to success in the first set. Polish side struggled to chase the score but they failed to match their performance with Italian side. First set ended at 25-22 with Italy’s better status.
Second Set
The first set victory allowed Italian team to kick-start the second set with commanding shots. They hit confidently and worked out an early lead of 8-4 in second set. PGE Skra became defensive and stayed behind the attack line. It created more trouble for
them. Italian players attacked with more ferocity and further widened the gap of points. They moved to 12-5 and received huge applause from the audience. Trentino’s side scored points by all means. Stokr, Riad, and Kaziyski stormed Poland’s half with powerful
shots. PGE Skra tried to resist to Italy’s strike but they failed to penetrate the power of speedy spikes. The second set also ended in Trentino’s favour (25-19).
Third Set
The loss of opening two sets flabbergasted Poland’s team. They realigned their positions and opened the third set with convincing shots. Their performance improved as they built a lead of 8-5. It restored Polish team’s confidence. They continued with success,
while Italians tried to break their rhythm. The resilient rival, Trentino BetClic returned in the game and tied the score at 13-all. Nonetheless, Poles didn’t take any pressure of the situation and once again picked up lead. The better play in third set enabled
them to secure the set at 25-20.
Fourth Set
PGE Skra was able to create an interesting twist in the game with previous set’s victory. Anyhow, fourth set was the turn of protagonists. Italians came strong of Poles and grabbed the control of operations. They added quick points and covered the length
of fourth set in 27 minutes. PGE Skra couldn’t avoid the chances of defeat and lost fourth set. Trentino BetClic declared influential final match victory and locked title trophy in their custody.
Top Scorers
Jan Stokr of Trentino BetClic settled for top-scorer’s position in the final match. He clipped 18 points via his explosive hits and excellent blocking. Likewise, Mariusz Wlazly of PGE Skra Belchatow contributed 13 points in his team’s score. Overall, Trentino
BetClic earned 31 points due to opponents’ errors, while Polish side bagged 26 points on opponents’ errors.
