Volleyball variations around the world – Volleyball Feature
Volleyball is a relatively recent game that has achieved popularity quickly among enthusiasts. It has now successfully reached many parts of the world and has attracted both male as well as female players.
As an anonymous volleyball player put it: “volleyball is the sport through which i am able to express my god-given talents of being an athlete. It is a sport which involves relating, pushing, and encouraging your teammates.”
Just like any newly organized sport, Volleyball has slightly different rules and regulations in different parts of the world. Volleyball has become such a popular sport the world over that it has generated quite a few variations of its kind. In this article,
we are going to take a look at games that have developed from volleyball.
First on our list is Footvolley. As the name implies, the sport took inspiration from beach volleyball as well soccer to come into being in 1965. The person responsible for conceiving Footvolley, Octavio de Moraes, belongs to Brazil. The story behind the
inception of the game revolved around a ban placed on soccer in Brazil during the mid-60s. However, the football players were still determined to play and they brought a football along for practice. But in order to be safe from the police, they used the volleyball
court and played volleyball by using their feet to get the ball over the net. This was the birth of Footvolley.
Next in line is Throwball. Both volleyball and Throwball can trace their origins back to the Young Men’s Christian Association where their rules were first drafted. Like volleyball, the players of both teams stand on two opposite sides of the court. However,
Throwball consists of nine players per team instead of the usual six in volleyball. The basic rules of Throwball are similar to that of volleyball. Unlike volleyball, where the players have to pass on the ball to another player upon contact by making a hit,
the players in Throwball are allowed to hold the ball for a short interval of time before they send it off across the net.
After Throwball we now move on to Newcomb ball. This sport came into being around the same time as volleyball and it had a fan following equivalent to that of volleyball. Newcomb ball has the credit of being the second team sport that was played in America,
the first one being basketball. Not only that, the game was also invented by a woman. Currently, the sport is played on a competitive level among athletes that have disabilities.
The next variant that we have for you has an interesting origin. Hooverball was specially devised for the president Herbert Hoover in order to keep his physical health in good condition. It was devised by the personal physician of the president himself.
The basic rules of the game are similar to that of volleyball except the ball used in hooverball is heavier than the one used in volleyball. However, unlike volleyball, the players are allowed to hold the ball for a few moments before throwing it off to the
other side. The scoring methodology used in hooverball is the one that is used in tennis.
These were some of the more popular variants of volleyball that are played in the world today.
