I have never made the varsity at my school... i am really good at volleyball, i also recently tried out for a club team and i didnt make that either. I have a couple of questions. Why cant i make the team? i have an excellent overhand serve, i have an almost flawless bump, i was the best setter on my jv team, i can spike really well, and i know like everything about volleyball. The girls who make varsity are popular, gorgeous, skinny (ya know the type). does this have something to do with that? i also am 5 3" and weigh about 140 (the height doesnt matter but the weight does i am overweight for my height and i try sooooo hard to loose weight trust me i am right now) does this have something to do with it? on the club team the coach at my school only picked (well helped pick there were other coaches) the varsity from my school, the varsity from the other school involved in this club, and 2 girls who were varsity backups on my jv team. there are a bunch of girls who are awesome like me

  1. It seems to me that you are facing lots of competition, although you are a decent player and probably the best at DS/Libero.

I would recommend that you sign up with a good club to get your games to another level. If the club coach can help you get a spot at your school team, you won't have to worry whether it is the problem with your school coach.

By all means you need to figure out where you can go to play high-level volleyball, to keep yourself sharp.

  2. Don't focus on how good or bad you are, focus on how you can improve your skills. I think your competition seems fierce. If I were you I would try doing small drills at home to improve your skills. The whole "skinny, popular" stuff means nothing. Practice your serves- they can be better no matter what. Keep bumping- to perfect it. Practice setting a lot- you can improve in anything. Even though you might be feeling down after those tryouts, be confident. I play volleyball and when I EVER doubt myself I do HORRIBLE.

You say you can't? YOU CAN! You get as much out of something as much as you put in it. That means practice. Here are a few drills that help me:

    1. Bumping a ball against the side of your house - helps strengthen mobility and control.

    2. Lay on your back and set the ball above your head - helps control and direct sets.

    3. Bump Set Spike Drill: Bump the ball in the air, set it, and spike it against the side of something for an easy rebound. - helps controlling and getting a feel for the ball.

    4. Go over your game situations. - it is ALWAYS good to know what to do when the score is close!

    5. Do a few suicides. - running back from point to point, (if you don't already know it is a running drill...not murder) helps tone leg muscles and trains you in correct motion.

I hope this helped, if you need anymore volleyball tips, PM me. -Carly

  3. i think if your as good as you say, then your coaches think maybe you don't have the heart or spirit as the other girls.do you have the heart to chase and dive for the ball?or do they?if you really think you need to lose weight,go for it...maybe it will help you in the long run,but i would talk to the coach!good luck!

  4. Well, some teams WANT tall or skinny people.

Or maybe it is your attitude (not to say you have a bad attitude, but I don't know you. lol.) coaches look for outgoing, friendly, coachable people with a good attitude & are willing to do whatever the coaches say, like if they want you to play a new position, and they also like people that smile.

It sounds like you are pretty good, maybe the other girls are just better, some of them may have had like 5-10 years of experiance, if you work hard enough, aything is possible.

You could try to get on another club team, there usually is more than one in every town (if it isn't a super-small town)

I really hope that you make them varsity team next year & that you can find a good club team :]

    best wishes !

  5. this all depends on what the coach is looking for. you could think you're the ebst one out there and not be what they're looking for. talk to the coach about it and see waht you can do. if you believe in your skills like you say you do and give 200% ALL the time then there's nothing stopping you. one thing that held my sister back from playing varsity was her attitude so watch that too. be sure totell your coach how you feel. hope this could help!!!!

  6. It happens.

    Tryout for a different club.

  7. to me, it seems like you are focusing on all of the negative things. instead of worrying about the coaches or whatever work on what you need to improve (and yes, there is always room for improvement). dont worry about the other girls... who cares if they are skinnier or more popular than you?!?!?!?! it sounds like you have the heart...... just apply yourself and give 10000000000000000000%

  8. Sometimes it's the skills AND attitude that matter. So, always have a good attitude during tryouts.

  9. Talk a lot, sho them you are good and confident. Ignore you're weight. Don't let it stop you from playing at all. Give a couple of the girls a nice hard hit in the face. Maybe then they'll realize. It might be your height, show them you might be short but you've got game. Try practicing your jump. Jump matters a whole lot!

Good luck making it next year!
