Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80040154.

event id=8193

my pc keeps crashing due to this error and i cant seem to find out why. any help would be great

  1. Error Code 0x80040154 is used by Microsoft for various reasons, including, but not limited to:

    Clip Organizer Cannot Complete the Operation

    BizTalk 2000 Orchestration schedule

    OLE object is being ignored

    Outlook 2007 upgrades.... and more.

    According to Microsoft, "The Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) is a set of COM APIs that implements a framework to allow volume backups to be performed while applications on a system continue to write to the volumes. VSS provides a consistent interface that allows coordination between user applications that update data on disk (writers) and those that back up applications (requesters)."

    In addition to the provided link "Troubleshooting VSS Applications" you might also want to run a built in utility called System File Checker. You'll need your original install disk. Running the scan could take over an hour but it checks for damaged or missing system files. If any are discovered it will prompt you to insert the install disk and fresh copies of the files will be installed.  These Microsoft articles give more information:
