Volume adjaustment doesn't work in laptop

HI I have compaq presario C770 TU laptop .I reinstalled win xp 2 days ago and after that my volume adjustment for conexant audio drivers doesn't work and moreover whenever i plug external speakers/headphone inbuilt speakers donot mute.I can still hear the same amount of volume from themCan u help me to fix this issueI will really appreciate ur help.Thanks
