Volume on phone?

We have some AT&T BIS-10 phones. Lately, people have started complaining that they can't hear what people say. These phones are pretty old. Is it possible that the handsets deteriorate over time? Is there a way to adjust the volume on these phones?

This is a common problem with any phone that has been in use a long time. In my previous life as a telephone repairer if someone says the other end cannot hear them it is 99% of the time the handset. When it comes to adjusting the volume that wont help the distant end hear you any better.

If you cant hear them I'd bet that is the handset too.  Have you tried moving a working handset to one of the problem phones?
