  1. As a retired senior rail manager I do health & safety checks for a local community transport service that provides carriage for people unable to use, or being without, suitable public transport.

I am also a governor on two local schools.

Thoughts?  Makes retirement enjoyable as you meet interesting people and get the personal satisfaction you are still part of the active community and are a valued part of it.

It also keeps your mind active and keeps you young and in touch with the world.

  2. I have and do volunteer for several charities (apart from my paid job) but always in a trustee or development role. Volunteering is not always about direct service delivery - there is room for people with management, finance, fundraising, HR and other specialist skills 'behind the scenes'.

  3. I volunteer as a counsellor for a mental health charity in the UK. I find it a very rewarding experience (I am a trained and qualified counsellor already) and I feel that I am doing some good in helping people who may not be able to afford to have private counselling. My clients amaze me with their determination and their honesty. I admire every single one of them.

  4. I work voluntarily for Oxfam, the job is quite rewarding and the people really nice. Not all the managers appreciate the fact you sort out peoples junk and i help to iron the clothes before they go out on sale. Its a nice thing to put on your CV. I helped out full time before i got a job, now i help out the 2 days im off from my full time job!

  5. I have been with Red Cross since August of 1992.  I have taveld to many disster affected areas including hurricane Andrew, 9/11. Huirricanes Rita, Katrina nd Wilma, I have been to Alabama for the tornado that struck the school, many of the nationally recognized disasters as well as the local fires that occur dailey here in SC.  I have participated in supporting the police and firemen in our area when there is a major search and rescue mission.  I love it, I am in disaster services, I hve met wonderful people.  I have been cross tained in many areas, I prefer Client Services but I have also done sheltering, mass feeding and other types of activities and community events.  What ever you enjoy doing, there is an opportunity at Red Cross

  6. the elderly, veterans, children, teenagers....you can choose any demographic.  if that doesn't work for you try personal interests like volunteering at public libraries, goodwill/thrift stores, soup kitchens (what i do), daycare centers, etc...

good luck and good for you!
