Volunteer Abroad!?

Hi everyone...I am an LPN student and will be graduating this May and I want to travel for volunteer work before I decide to settle and work finally. I would love to work at a refugee camp but any place is fine. Right now I am just looking for fees that I can afford so if anyone has done something like this please reply to my question.

Any other advise as to what I can also do when I graduate will be great. Thanks for reading! Happy leap year :)

  1. Wow, for once, someone posting to YahooAnswers who wants to volunteer abroad but ALSO has skills needed in the developing world!!

Since you have real experience that is very much needed (as an LPN), you might be able to find opportunities where you do NOT have to pay, as long as you can make a commitment of longer than just a few weeks.

If you are in the USA, look at the web sites for CHF International and for Winrock International (both have short and long-term assignments, for USA citizens only).  If you are in the UK, see the VSO web site. If you are an Australian citizen, see the web site for Australian Volunteers International. Canadian citizen? See VSO Canada. Also apply as a UN Volunteer, via http://www.unvolunteers.org.

Also see the vacancies posted at

    http://www.reliefweb.int

    and

    http://www.developmentgateway.org

    and

    http://www.careerswithoutborders.com/

If you see an organization that obviously involves medical personal, even if they aren't posting a job that is specifically around your qualifications, contact the organization to let them know your skills, academic qualifications and availability to work abroad.

    And, ofcourse, see

    http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/vol...

  2. I have the perfect opportunity for you. Global Volunteer Network is a NZ-based organization but as long as you speak fluent English, you can apply to one of their programs. I've done a *lot* of research on overseas volunteering and they have by far the lowest costs.

And, they have a program in Ghana where you work at a Liberian refugee camp. Check out their website - I think this is right up your alley!
