Volunteer Suggestions..planning on being a Dentist?

Well I am 16 years old and a sophomore in high school. and I think I really need to have some volunteer work . I've always wanted to be a dentist...but the thing is, I have never seen someone volunteering at a dentist clinic or an orthodontist clinic. I think it would really help me understand what it's like to be in that knid of working environment, but I don't know if volunteering in a clinic would disrupt/annoy them because I'm not experienced. If that won't work, what are some other things I can do to volunteer? Thanks!

  1. CALL YOUR dentist, ask him or her if you can come in and observe for a day, talk to the people in his office, they might have some ideas....my son wanted to be a dentist, he changed over to Pharmacy and loves it....dentistry was too boring for him..plus he checked into it and found because of the medical malpractice insurance he could make way more money in pharmacy

  2. When my dentist retired he worked for some type of charity denistry thing where people with no insurance came for emergency treatment, sort of like a free clinic.

  3. You can "shadow"...its basically just following someone around all day to see exactly what they do on a given day.

You can go to your local dentist office and ask them if you can do a shadowing experience there and tell them your plan.

It should not be annoying to them, they'd probably be glad to let you!

I am applying to some colleges for careers in health care, and most REQUIRE you to do some sort of shadowing before applying.
