Question:

Volunteer in Mexico?

I live in Southern California. I will be attending school here and am hoping to find some place where I can go into Mexico, when I have free weekends and what not and help out (in any area). I don't need an organization necessarily; I am able to get there myself. I would like to work on my Spanish, see another country, meet new people and help out. Any ideas?

  1. See churches

    SeeMexico mission pages online

    Other Non profits.

    School sources

    Salvation Army

& or wait till next Mexico quake hits for Help.

Best bet: churches with missions in Mexico.

  2. Where in Mexico are you able to travel to regularly? And what skills can you offer? Do you have a CV ready to share with any organization who asks for such -- in Spanish -- as well as a list of references?

MADRE (http://www.madre.org) is a small organization that supports women-focused organizations in Central Ameria and Africa, and might be able to recommend an organization in Mexico for you to contact to offer your services. The regional offices for Oxfam, Save the Children, UNICEF, UNIFEM and UNDP might also be able to recommend credible NGOs in a specific area of Mexico.

You need to be prepared to be responsible for all transportation and accommodation costs, just as you would if you were volunteering in the USA. You may also be asked to pay a fee to an NGO to cover the costs of security, training, equipment, etc.

  3. Volunteering in Mexico

Our care placements in Mexico are either in Guadalajara or Ciudad Guzman. Volunteers work in orphanages, schools for the blind, a Down's Syndrome Centre or a home for AIDS patients. Not only do volunteers provide much-needed support for the permanent staff but they also contribute to the well-being and all-round development of the children by washing, feeding and dressing them, and simply being with them.
