im part of the volunteer organization at our school

volunteering is not necessary but almost half of our school (900 out of 2000 people) is in it

the problem is people dont do stuff until the end of the year they try to cram hours in (30 hours and you get a stamp on your transcript) so a lot of ppl do that but we want people to be involved in the beginning as well

how can encourage people to work in the beginning so they dont have to go crazy in the end? any ideas would work and thank you so much for your response

  1. 1. You could offer recognition to the first 20 people to get 10 hours, then the first 40 to get 20 hours.

    2. Plan some volunteer activities at the beginning and have all your active people talk it up and personally invite a few new members and 2 of the worst procrastinators from last year to this.  It could be a Habitat workday or food collection transfer from the school to the food pantry--something where you need a lot of people all at once.

    3. Have a testimonial by someone who put it off till the end and regrets it now.

  2. Set the hrs up as so many per grade period or per month vs 30 a yr.   The ides someone suggested or rewardingb the first to reach a certain level is good but will only encourage thise who are real achievers and once someone hgets to be the first that ends that motivation.   You ,ay also want to have the cut off time on hrs be a mionth or so before end of school.  That way some celebration can also be planned for the ppl whop achieve the goal. But do have some provisiopn that someone who has a legit reason like being out for illness for an extended time can make up the lacking hrs.  This not only ends jamming up on hrs it encourages ppl to learn todeal with larger projects a little at a time which is good habit for term papers etc and for work life too,

  3. Well, you can't make people want to help the community without bribing them, I guess. At our school, we have a special "camp" that only the top twenty or so with the most vollunteer hours get to go to and it's fun. Maybe you could do something like this for the kids in your voluneer organization. Hope I helped!
