Question:

Volunteer somehow with Foster Children.?

I used to be a foster child. It was a really, really bad childhood, too graphic to explain here. But I made it through h**l and back and now I am doing well for myself. I called my local foster care place here in CT and left a message to request to become a mentor or something. No one has called me back after several messages. Does anyone know who I can call to become a mentor for foster children? I want to help those who need help, the help I didn't get when I was in foster care...

  1. I want to do the exact same thing.   I also do not know where to go.  I think it is an excellent idea though.

  2. Contact your local county social services dept. to see if they can use your services.  It could difficult for them to allow you access because of privacy concerns.  Perhaps an internship would allow you to participate.  Big Brother & Big Sister programs reach some foster children.

I do not have direct access to foster kids & teens, but I developed The Shoebox Project <www.ShoeBoxProject.org> that donates items to them via caseworkers.  Perhaps a similar project would allow you to reach those you want to help, even if indirectly.

Good luck & thank you for wanting to help those who are @ risk.

  3. Look for group homes in your area. You could call United way Ministries I'm pretty sure they are in every state, ask them if they know of any local children's shelters or homes tell them you want to volunteer so they don't think your trying to find someone. As I'm sure you might know the foster children in these homes are more in need due to their lack of family. Also you could look in the phone book under community service and you might find some of the homes or the thrift stores that sometimes help raise money for them. Please if you find one to foster make it one of the older ones that will have a smaller chance of finding a full time family. Good luck, wish you were in SC I could tell you 20 to go to.

  4. There is a program called "Court Appointed Special Advocates" or CASA.  I don't know if it's national or just organized somehow in each city.  I found one link, below.  You could also explore Crisis Nursery.  There are Crisis Nurseries in many major as well as smaller cities.

  5. I can try to help if you are in india specially in haryana, just send me details and the location of your city
