Volunteering and resumes?

Just a little bit about me

I'm 15, a freshman in high school, would like to go to a nice college, school's about to be out (leaving me with nothing productive to do), and I've heard that getting community service hours helps your college resume.

1. Is this true?

2. Did you have fun doing community service? I'm planning on doing 20+ hours this summer and if possible, at least 35 hours.

3. I'm kinda shy and would like to know if community service helps out with social skills at all.

  1. First of all, good for you for planning to do community service.  You should find something you enjoy, and work a few hours a week.  The more responsibility and initiative you take the better it is for your college application, but something is better than nothing.  Do you love animals?  Work at the animal shelter.  Care about going green?  Plant trees in the park.  There are plenty of places that would love your volunteer hours.  I personally love kids and I taught karate as part of my community service hours before I went to college.  I actually got a full ride based on my "leadership" which was basically community service situations.  Anyway, do it!  It will help you with social skills if you let it be an opportunity to reach out--try to meet someone new and befriend someone that you might be afraid to approach in a school situation.

    Good Luck!

  2. Community service is good but so is getting a job. My whole college resume is going to be about how instead of doing after school activities or volunteering I worked my *** of at my job of 3 years at a boat yard. Im 17 and been there since I was 15 and dont regret it at all. Get a serious job if you can, not after school at a local diner or McDonalds if you know what I mean.

  3. 1. yes, colleges LOVE volunteer work

    2. I had loads of fun! I worked at a wildlife rehabilitation center in my town and got to work with hawks, eagles, owls, raccoons... the list goes on and on.

    3. This definitely boosts your social skills, and even if it doesn't, you still learn something new and exciting.

  4. Don't know about the impact on your college resume but yes, it will help u socially.  Doing something to help others will also make u feel god about yourself.   It may help your shyness in a good way.

  5. 1. Yes it looks VERY good on your CV! Cv is resume in UK

    2. I think it depends on what you enjoy doing. Pick something you think you would like to do, and keep doing.

    3. Of course it helps socially again depending on what u do you'll make friends, don't get stuck wid ppl that arn't yr age 24/7.

    Wish u al the best.

  6. Do as much volunteering as you can because it helps a lot. When colleges look at it they get really impressed.

  7. Hey man,

Good for you on being proactive with this! Colleges look at all kinds of stuff on your resume and application.  20 hours/ week is a lot , and would be appreciated by a lot of people.  Dont put all your efforts into just that though.  try getting a part time job as well so a college can see that you cannot be described in only one way. Both of these activities can help you improve your social skills if you find the right kind of task.  Best of luck!
