  1. When my daughters first began to volunteer they delivered flowers or cards to patients.  Now they mostly work in the Human Resource department.  They answer phones, help make employee badges, file paperwork, xerox and scan various items.

When they work in the Emergency Room, they answer phones and put paperwork on clipboards for patients.  They will sometimes run errands, such as bringing paperwork to another department to be signed.  They have also helped at the nurses station on the various floors. When the hospital had a health fair they helped to develop the flyers and print them out.  Later they helped to run the booths at the fair.

Some volunteers sit behind the counter in the main lobby of the hospital and answer questions/give directions that kind of thing.

At this particular hospital if you work 4 hours you are given a voucher for a free meal at the cafeteria (which has surprisingly good food).

  2. basically there are a wide range of things. Depending on your age and experience. Stuff like helping out  with paperwork, or putting labels on drugs. Measuring dosages. Helping out in the maternity ward.
