Question:

Volunteering at women's shelters in Brooklyn?

Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone knows of any volunteering opportunities at women's shelters in Brooklyn. One of the clubs I am a member of was interested in helping out at one of them sometime during this or next month, preferably working with children. However, a lot of the ones I've found require you to take certain classes first, and most of the girls are too busy with school to be able to attend those. Does anyone have contact info for any shelters that might work out? Thanks!

  1. If you want to volunteer at a women's shelter, then you MUST go through the classes/orientation they provide. There is no way around it. The nature of their work absolutely requires such. Taking these "classes", by the way, counts toward any community service hour requirements you may have, and looks great on a resume.

To find opportunities at other organizations that might not require as much training, try VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com). Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site (http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/).
