I was looking for something to do this spring break and at first I wanted to study aboard. After looking nonstop for a place that was somewhere inbetween safe and commerical I decided I would rather volunteer somewhere in the United States but other than my home state (CT).

Is an organization where you can volunteer in different states? I dont know what you would call it. Thanks

  1. The American Red Cross is very beneficial to everyone. It has offices all across the country. Why not contact them and find the place that is suitable for you? They are decent and moral individuals. My experience comes from seeing them in action here in Chicago, Illinois.

  2. The American Hiking Society sponsors several excellent volunteer vacations every year, constructing or rebuilding footpaths, cabins and shelters in some of the USA's most beautiful spots.

Sierra Club volunteer vacations help to state and federal land agencies. Service trips range from helping with research projects at whale calving grounds in Maui to assisting with archaeological site restoration in New Mexico.

Habitat for Humanity has activities all over the country

For volunteering in the Gulf Coast (yes, they are still struggling down there), see:

  3. Try Houses for Humanity

  4. You would want to choose an organization and then contact them about volunteering.  What are you inhterested in and where do you want to go?  You will definitely be able to do anything in any state!  Just start googling the states you want along with the topics in volunteering that interest you.  A fun idea might be to work at a camp for kids with cancer or disabilities.  I spent a week doing that and it was a very positive experience!  Contact the american cancer society for more information.  They do camps all over the US!
