Question:

Volunteering in Africa(Sudan)?

I am a University student (19 years old) from the UK, I have volunteered overseas for prolonged periods of time before. I now however wish to volunteer directly on the ground in areas that desperately need help, I don't have medical qualifications which seems to be a requisite for many of the most known organizations that operate in displacement camps in Chad - such as MSF, Red Cross etc.

I know the dangers of working in such areas, but if anyone can point me in the direction of organizations working to aid Sudanese refugees directly I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Gav

(PS - I am not searching for expedition companies, of eco tourism companies, or commercial volunteer companies -

  1. From what you are writing, I would say you are too young and lack the skills and experience needed in places like Sudan. Jobs posted at http://www.developmentex.com and http://www.reliefweb.int, which include MSF, the Red Cross, VSO, etc.,  and include work in Sudan, require people with at least degrees, if not Master's Degrees. As you will see as you read these job postings, *highly* skilled people are needed.

  2. Gavin,

Sorry I cannot help you with opportunities in Sudan but I do know of two others in Malawi and Zambia,

    www.rippleafrica.org    (Liz and Geoff Furber)

    www.risingfountains.org  (Mathias Zimba)

    Good luck!
