Question:

Volunteering...?

I need and want to volunteer this summer in order to get some volunteer work (for college) in before I get a job. I also want to meet new people because I am very shy and my social network is limited. Can you suggest any places to volunteer? I am 15 years old, live in Hampton Roads, Virginia, and enjoy history, genealogy, tutoring, etc. Can you also suggest other places where I can meet new people of my age?

  1. ok well i live there too so i know a few close by places. the jcoc is always looking for people to volunteer there(its a soup kitchen) the food bank but i forget exactly where it is. or you could go to a local church and join the youth group they always have volunteer work in the summer. but if you like history maybe a nursing home or veteran hospital place because you can sit and talk with the old people they love to tell their life stories but you probably wont find young people there. also lots of young people typically help at hospitals or animal shelters

  2. I would offer tutoring service in safe area of Tidewater.  Perhaps, one of the Navy family facilities.   I think this would play well on your college resume and not place your life at risk in the fashion that a social service job in Norfolk would involve.  Maybe the genealogy angle would work with an historical society in Tidewater.    I would think the genealogy deal  would open up more social opportunities.  There is a bit of an interplay between history and genealogy.  That is another plus for the historical society volunteer work.
