Volvo Golf Champions: Updates from day one
The first round of Volvo Golf Champions kicked off on 27 January, 2011 at The Royal Golf Club in Bahrain. Here is a quick glance at the leaderboard of day one.
Johan Edfors held the lead at the end of first round after smashing a score of 64 on the course, which is designed by Colin Montgomerie.
The Swede teed off from the back and opened with a fabulous birdie, which whooped over the fairway right into the hole. The crowd clapped at the beautiful shot, which served as a huge source of motivation for the player. In response to the applause, the
player chipped in two back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th hole to take an edge over the 97-man field, which was busy in planning a strategy to cope up with the course.
However, on the following hole, the veteran missed the par putt as the ball rolled faster due to the wind and crossed the pin. Due to that, Edfors had to settle with the first bogey of the tournament.
Despite the blow, the Swede did not give up hope and fired another shot from the fairway, which landed right into the centre of the 17th green. Without wasting a second, Edfors chipped in a careful stroke towards the pin, which went in. The three-time
winner on European Tour wrapped the first half of the day with a score of 33.
On his way to the north course, which is also known as  the front nine, he fired two more birdies in the opening three holes to climb up the leaderboard with a score of five-under-par. However, this was only the start, as Edfors picked three more points
on later holes and shot into the top most section of the leaderboard.
Two strokes behind was Pablo Larrazabal and Peter Hanson. The Spaniard smashed seven birdies against one bogey, which he earned after missing the fairway at the 16th hole.
On the other hand, the Swede drafted a blemish-free scorecard with 100 per cent Green Hits in Regulation. He carved six birdies with the first three on the back nine.
A little below stood Paul Casey who was worried before coming to the course, owing to it’s difficult layup. The Englishman messed up on the back when he bogeyed the 10th hole and double bogeyed the 17th. Despite that, he picked up two
points on the back and five on the point with the help of a fabulous eagle at the par-5 ninth hole.
